Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan - The U.S. went 1-1 in the morning repechage session at the Greco-Roman World Championships. Max Nowry (Colorado Springs Co./U.S. Army WCAP) won his match at 55 kg, and will wrestle for bronze tonight. John Stefanowicz (Camp LeJeune, N.C./U.S. Marine Corps) fell at 82 kg and was eliminated from competition.

Nowry dominated his opponent, African champion, Abdelkarim Fergat of Algeria, 11-3. After earning a passivity point, Nowry turned Fergat three times from par terre with a gut wrench to take a 7-0 lead.

In the second period, Nowry was called for passivity and put down. Fergat turned him with a gut wrench of his own, but Nowry scrambled out and scored on an unprepared Feragt to make the score 9-3. In the closing seconds, Nowry earned another takedown to get the technical fall.

Nowry will wrestle 2018 World champion Eldaniz Azizli of Azerbaijan this evening for bronze.

Stefanowicz battled Haitao Qian of China. Qian, an Asian Championships bronze medalist, pinned returning World silver medalist Emrah Kus of Turkey earlier in the tournament.

Stefanowicz was put down for passivity, and couldn’t withstand his Chinese opponent’s par terre offense, which was the difference in the match.

The medal matches will take place tonight at 8 p.m. local time.
