Gantt and McCall claim bronze medals at Miners Glory International

KEMEROVO, Russia – Four American freestyle wrestlers represented the United States at the Miners Glory International in Kemerovo, Russia. Overall, the USA claimed two bronze medals and two fifth-place finishes.
Winning bronze medals were Wolfpack Wrestling Club athletes Tommy Gantt at 74 kg and Timmy McCall at 97 kg.
Gantt began his tournament strong with a 10-4 win over Kamil Rybicki of Poland, who was seventh at the 2019 Senior World Championships. In the quarterfinals Gantt fell to Budazhapov of Kyrgyzstan in the quarterfinals, but was eventually pulled into repechage when Budazhapov advanced to the finals.
To move onto the bronze match, Gantt defeated Ashvanyan of Russia in the first repechage bout.
Gantt took on fellow American Logan Massa in the bronze-medal match. Massa took a 3-1 lead into the break from a passivity and a takedown.
In the second period, there was no scoring until the final 40 seconds, where Gantt scored a takedown to take the lead on criteria. With less than 10 ticks left on the clock, Gantt lifted Massa and threw him out of bounds for five points and an eventual 8-3 win.
Prior to wrestling for bronze, Massa collected two shutout tech fall wins to open his tournament, including a 10-0 win over Santzier of China and an 11-0 win against Khizryev of Russia.
Massa then fell to Budazhapov in the semifinals to go to the bronze match.
At 97 kg, McCall advanced to the semifinals, where he dropped the match to 2016 Olympian Mamed Ibragimov of Kazakhstan, 8-1. For bronze, McCall bounced back to dominate Ismailov of Russia in a 10-0 technical fall.
At 86 kg, Lee Davis also recorded a fifth-place finish. He dropped his first bout to Vereb of Hungary but was pulled into repechage, where he won a bout to move into the bronze match. For third, Lee lost to Matuev of Russia on criteria, 3-3.
Also competing for the USA was Youssif Hemida, who competed at 125 kg.
