McKendree, King have strong showings at loaded Missouri Valley Open for women

MARSHALL, Mo. – A total of 34 teams and 361 wrestlers competed on Sunday at the Missouri Valley Open, considered the strongest of the early-season competitions in women’s college wrestling. This event will give a strong indication of the teams and individuals to watch during this year’s college season.
Placing in the top two spots in the standings were McKendree in first and King in second. Both teams had a pair of individual champions.
McKendree’s two champions were Felicity Taylor (116) and Emma Bruntil (136). Taylor, a 2019 WCWA Nationals runner-up, defeated Peyton Prussin of Life in the finals by a 10-0 technical fall. Bruntil, a highly touted freshman, scored a 10-0 technical fall over King’s 2019 WCWA runner-up Nicole Joseph.
King’s two champions were Cheyenne Sisenstein (123) and Allison Petix (130). Sisenstein, seventh in the 2019 WCWA Nationals, defeated 2019 NAIA champion Tiana Jackson of Menlo in the finals, 14-6. Petix, fifth at last year’s WCWA Nationals, pinned Colorado Mesa’s Cindy Zepeda in the finals in 2:48.
Wayland Baptist was led by 101-pound champion Nina Pham, and, competing unattached, the 191 pound champion Paige Baynes. Pham, a NAIA National runner-up last year, scored a 13-2 technical fall over Iverly Navarro of Providence in the finals. Baynes, who has won a WCWA National title two years ago, and an NAIA Nationals title last year, stopped McKendree’s Sidney Kimber in the finals, 9-6.
Solin Piearcy of Menlo College won the title at 143 pounds. In 2019, Piearcy won titles at both the WCWA Nationals and the NAIA National Invitational. She beat Sienna Ramirez of Southern Oregon in the finals, 3-0. Menlo, last year’s WCWA Nationals and NAIA National Invitational team champions, placed ninth in the standings but did not bring their full squad. ‘
The champion at 170 pounds was Rachel Watters of Oklahoma City, who was a 2018 Final X runner-up and second on the Senior National team that season. Watters beat Brittany Marshall, a graduate assistant at North Central College competing unattached, 8-2.
McKayla Campbell of Campbellsville, a 2019 WCWA runner-up, captured the 109 title with a 10-0 technical fall over Yurie Yoneoka of the University of Providence. Campbell was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.
Kayla Marano of the Lion WC, an Emmanuel wrestler competing unattached, claimed the 155 pound title with a 12-2 technical fall over Gladdys Palma of Southern Oregon.
