The first session of men’s freestyle at the Bill Farrell International was filled with phenomenal high-level action. Across all three mats, some of the best wrestlers in the country, and the world, were duking it out.

74 kg, a bracket loaded with collegiate talent, was particularly intriguing to watch. Jason Nolf and Isaiah Martinez emerged victorious from their halves of the bracket and will wrestle in the finals. Martinez defeated Nolf two matches to one in the best-of-three finals at the 2019 World Team Trials Challenge Tournament.

Nolf stormed through the bracket, outscoring opponents 34-0. In the semifinals, he defeated fellow Nittany Lion Wrestling Club member and former teammate two-time NCAA champion Vincenzo Joseph, 6-0.

Martinez was dominant through the opening rounds, but had a tightly contested, 8-7, semifinal victory over a very game Tommy Gantt.

Nathan Tomasello and Seth Gross will meet in the 57 kg finals. Tomasello defeated Zane Richards in the semifinals, 8-6. Richards had knocked off 2018 World Team Trials champion at 61 kg Nahshon Garrett, 5-3, in the quarterfinals.

Gross bested 2019 NCAA champion Nick Suriano, 4-2, in the quarterfinals. Trailing in the closing seconds, Gross exposed Suriano to earn the come-from-behind victory. In the semifinals he defeated current National Team No. 3 Darian Cruz by technical fall, 12-1.

At 65 kg, the two favorites in the bracket Frank Molinaro and Jordan Oliver both made the finals. Molinaro, a 2016 Olympian, defeated Oliver at the 2019 World Team Trials Challenge Tournament to claim the No. 3 spot on the National Team.

Alex Dieringer looked comfortable in his 86 kg debut. Dieringer has been the No. 2 at 79 kg the past two years behind Kyle Dake, who won gold at the 2018 and 2019 World Championships. In the finals, he will face 2018 U23 World Team member Myles Martin. A four-time NCAA All-American and one-time National champion, this is Martin’s first year focused fully on freestyle.

Kyle Snyder earned two technical falls without surrendering a point on his way the finals. Leading 6-0 in the semifinals, Snyder added an exclamation point to his victory with a five-point feet to back suplex. In the finals, he will see current No. 3 at 92 kg Michael Macchiavello, who has also not been scored on yet this tournament.

Macchiavello defeated No. 3 at 97 kg Ty Walz, 4-0, in the semifinals. He also secured his berth to the Olympic Team Trials, which will take place this April, as Snyder has already qualified.

At 125 kg, current No. 2 Gable Steveson will square off with six-time National Team member Dom Bradley. Steveson defeated 2018 U23 World silver medalist Youssif Hemida, 7-3, in the semifinals. Bradley has yet to be challenged this tournament, winning his opening match 10-0 and his semifinals match, 9-0, over 2014 Junior World champion Amar Dheshi.

The finals will start at 6:00 pm and can be streamed on Flowrestling.
