New York, N.Y. – The Greco-Roman portion of the Bill Farrell International concluded this evening with four Americans bringing home titles.
At 130 kg, 2018 World silver medalist Adam Coon dominated No. 3 on the National Team Jacob Mitchell, 9-0. Coon countered a throw attempt by Mitchell for two points and utilized his gut wrench to expose Mitchell twice for a 6-0 lead. Staying aggressive, Coon earned a passivity point and turned Mitchell again in par terre with another gut wrench to wrap up his victory. Coon already secured his Olympic Team Trials spot, so Mitchell still earned a berth to the Trials.
G’Angelo Hancock was equally dominant at 97 kg. In his finals match, he defeated Ahmed Hassan of Egypt, 9-0. Hancock earned a step out point to take a 1-0 lead. He then drove Hassan to his back for four points, extending the lead to 5-0. On the edge of the mat, Hancock picked up another 2 points with exposure from a gut wrench. Leading big, Hancock put Hassan to his back on the edge of the mat and picked up a fall.
Alejandro Sancho won his third Bill Farrell title by defeating Hayanobu Shimizu of Japan, 5-1. Sancho had clinched his Trials berth after his semifinals win, which guaranteed him being the highest placing American medalist at the weight class.
At 60 kg, Max Nowry forfeited to Ryan Mango. Nowry, a World Team member at 55 kg and Mango, a World Team member at 63 kg, both have already secured their Olympic Team Trials bids. The pair are teammates in the Army’s World Class Athlete Program.
The tournament’s outstanding wrestler was Alan Vera at 87 kg. In the finals, Vera defeated Aliaksandr Kikiniou of Belarus, 4-1. Kikiniou was a 2009 World bronze medalist and is a two-time Bill Farrell champion.
After a strong tournament, Spencer Woods fell in the 77 kg finals to Hassan Hassan Ahmed Mohamed of Egypt, 6-1. Woods still earned a bid to the Trials by finishing as the highest placing American medalist in the bracket.
The two other Americans to qualify for the Olympic Team Trials were Sammy Jones at 63 kg and Chandler Rogers at 87 kg. Jones defeated Matthew Schmitt, 8-0, in the third place match while Chandler Rogers won by fall over Satoki Mukai of Japan for bronze.
Men’s freestyle wrestling will start tomorrow at 8:30 AM and can be streamed on Flowrestling.
