Woods wins gold, Brackett and Eubanks get silver at Malar Cupen in Sweden

VASTERAS, Sweden – The U.S. won three Senior Greco-Roman medals on the final day of the Malar Cupen on Sunday.


Capturing a gold medal at 77 kg/169.5 lbs. was 2019 U.S. Open runner-up Spencer Woods (Kotzebue, Alaska /New York AC/NMU-OTS) who finished with a perfect 5-0 record in the tournament. He secured a 4-4 criteria decision in the finals against 2019 European Cadet bronze medalist Simon Borkenhagen of Sweden.


After going 2-0 on Saturday with a technical fall and a pin, Woods opened on Sunday with a forfeit over Pepes Panagiotis of Greece. He qualified for the finals with a dominant 10-2 technical fall over Johan Hedberg of Sweden.


Two U.S. wrestlers won silver medals, Tommy Brackett (Memphis, Tenn./NMU-OTS) at 82 kg/180.5 lbs. and Timothy Eubanks (Sparks, Nev./NMU-OTS) at 97 kg/211.5 lbs.


Brackett won his only match on Saturday, then came back with two big technical fall wins on Sunday to qualify for the finals. He beat Martin Gistorp and Anton Valapuro of Sweden, both by 8-0 margin. In the gold-medal finals, he fell to 2018 Nordic silver medalist Anton Olsson of Sweden, 5-2.


Eubanks won his pool on Saturday with two big wins, stopping Benjamin Sjöstrand of Sweden, 12-3 and Kostas Chasapis of Greece, 8-0. In Sunday’s gold-medal finals, he was pinned by Jacob Logård of Sweden in 2:01. Logard was fifth in the 2019 Junior World Championships.


A number of U.S. age-group athletes also competed during the weekend. Winning gold medals among the American youth were Ryker Graff (U14 38 kg), Luke Lilledahl (U14 41 kg) and Braeden Hamill (U11 31 kg).
