Tulsa, Okla- Shortly after their women’s freestyle team claimed their first title, Illinois continued their Greco-Roman dominance at the Junior National Duals, picking up their third title in three years with a 46-21 victory over Minnesota Blue.
Paxton Creese kicked the dual off at 113 pounds with a 10-0 technical fall for Minnesota. In the opening minute, Creese hit a big four-point throw. He finished the match off quickly with three turns off a gut wrench.
Illinois got on the board at 120 pounds, where Nain Vazquez picked up a 13-2 technical fall. Vazquez racked up points with his gut wrench. Brody Norman would claim another for Illinois, earning a 8-5 decision at 126 pounds.
Minnesota would take the next bout with a 9-4 decision at 132 pounds by Mitchel Petersen. However, Justin Benjamin would kick start a string of victories for Team Illinois with a pin at 132 pounds. Benjamin transitioned from a body lock to a headlock to pick up the fall. After a 1-1 first period, Luke Odom picked up a takedown, a turn and a four-point lateral drop to earn a 9-1 decision at 138 pounds. At 152 pounds, Fidel Mayora scored a 10-0 techincal fall, hitting two four-point throws, and a two-point head pinch to wrap things up in the first period.
Colby Njos tried to turn things around for Minnesota, earning a 14-1 technical fall at 160 pounds. However, Illinois proved to have too much fire power in their lineup, taking the next five matches by bonus point victories. At 170 pounds, Adrien Cramer hit a headlock for a 21 second pin. Abe Assad would pick up his own fall by headlock at 182 pounds in 1:02. Brandon Hoselton earned a 12-0 technical fall, throwing his opponent to his back numerous times. The headlocks continued at 220 pounds, with Ramin Abraham earning a pin in 3:42. At 285 pounds, Aydin Guttridge picked up Illinois’s last pin, fittingly enough, with a head lock at 2:43.
Minnesota would take the last two matches of the dual with Jore Volk winning 14-7 at 100 pounds, and Blake West earning a 13-0 technical fall at 106 pounds.
