SPOKANE, Wash. – For the second time this week, Minnesota Blue and Illinois advanced to the finals of the 16U National Duals. On Thursday, Minnesota Blue beat Illinois for the Greco-Roman title, 40-33. Today, the two teams advanced within the Gold-Silver Pool again for a rematch with the freestyle title up for grabs.

As would be expected, this showdown went down to the very last match. However, it was Minnesota Blue’s dominance in the lighter weights, winning six straight bouts to end the match, which led to its 40-34 victory over Illinois and a team double title at the 16U National Duals.

Illinois led 30-16 after a win at heavyweight, and six matches remained in the light weights. After five straight wins, Minnesota Blue took a 35-34 lead with only the 120 pound match left. Maxwell Peterson of Minnesota squared off with Abraham Hinrichsen of Illinois.

Petersen scored a spin-behind takedown to lead 2-0 at the break. In the second period, as the wrestlers sparred for position, Peterson powered directly into Hinrichsen, taking right to his back for a pin, creating a huge celebration on the Minnesota bench.

The six-match lightweight run for Minnesota was impressive, featuring two technical falls and two pins. It started at 88 pounds, as Alan Koehler was dominant on his feet and on the mat for a 13-2 technical fall over Benjamin Dunne. A slick takedown to a bow-and-arrow turn gave Koehler an early 4-0 lead, and he added three more takedowns and a bar arm turn to secure the technical fall.

Next up was Caleb Thoennes at 94 pounds, who quickly needed just 14 second to pin Dominic Schiavone. Thoennes hit a double leg takedown and pressed Schiavone for the fall.

Another bonus point win came at 106, as Mason Gehloff scored three takedowns and two gut wrenches in a 12-2 technical fall over Benjamin Aranada.

However, it was the two close decisions during the run which proved to be the difference. At 100 pounds, Jore Volk of Minnesota and Kannon Webster of Illinois went to the break tied at 2-2, with Webster holding the criteria. Volk scored a quick step out in the second period to lead 3-2. Webster almost converted a takedown as time ran out, and the Illinois coaches challenged to no avail. The point for a failed challenge made it 4-2 for Volk.

Likewise, at 112 pounds, Brendan Howes of Minnesota needed to wrestle the entire match to edge Joseph Fernau, 8-6. Howes scored three first-period takedowns to lead 6-0 at the break, but Fernau scored a takedown and turn to close it to 6-4. A Howes takedown made it 8-4, and Fernau was able to get one more takedown, but not enough to catch up.

The first match of the dual meet showed the competitiveness of this rivalry. Minnesota’s Derrick Cardinal battled Joey Cape of Illinois, who was up a weight from the Greco-Roman finals. Cape led 4-2 early, but Cardinal rallied to take a 10-4 lead in the second. Cape closed it to 10-6 late in the bout, but Cardinal closed out the win to get Minnesota going right from the start.

Illinois rebounded with three straight matches, included two bonus wins. The run started at 132, with another close and competitive battle, as Illinois’ Jack Milos had a strong second period to defeat Chase DeBlaere, 13-7. Tied at 4-4 at the break, Milos started a scramble with a four-point move and kept the edge in an a period of back-and-forth action.

Illinois added a pair of bonus point wins at 138 and 145. Dean Hamiti, Jr. scored early and often for a first-period 10-0 technical fall over Carl Berg. Brayden Thompson kept it going for Illinois, jumping to a quick 4-0 lead, then turning Landen Johnson to secure a first-period pin at 1:30..

In a closely contested battle, Minnesota bounced back with a win at 152, as Hunter Lyden edged Robert Major, 6-5. Major jumped to a 4-0 lead, but Lyden came back strong to tie it at 5-5. In a scramble on the edge, Lyden hipped into Major for a stepout with seven seconds left for the winning point.

Illinois ran off three more wins to pad their lead. At 160, Caden Ernd used a four-point move early in the second period to defeat Tyler Raway 8-3. Next up was Andrew Wenzel at 170, who jumped to an 8-0 lead and was able to pin Anthony Tuttle with three seconds left in the first-period.

The third straight Illinois win was a barnburner, as Mario Tormey held on to edge Cayden Homme , 8-7 at 182. Tormey had three takedowns and a gut wrench to lead 8-2 at the break. Homme chipped away at the lead, all the way through the second period, and closed it to 8-7 on takedown, a caution point and two stepouts, but ran out of time for a comeback.

Minnesota scored a clutch pin at 195 to hault the Illinois run, as Bennett Tabor pinned Tom Culp with just three seconds left in the first period. Culp ran off a 5-0 lead, but Tabor nailed two four-point takedowns on the edge to move ahead 8-5, before getting the pin.

Illinois won the last two heavy weights, with Michael Roath (220) and Hayden Copass (285) scoring decisions. Roath scored a four-point double leg takedown in the second period, the difference in a 6-6 criteria win over Max Balou. Copass scored the only two takedowns to defeat Gavin Layton at heavyweight, 5-1.

Then came the Minnesota lightweight charge, which did not end until Maxwell Peterson’s pin to close out the amazing comeback win.

Pennsylvania, which had been second in the B pool behind Illinois, powered to a 38-30 win over Georgia to claim third place. Technical falls in the final two bouts by Ethan Berginc (113) and Rocco Welsh (120) gave Team PA the edge.

Placing fifth was Iowa, with a powerful 52-22 victory over California. Team New Jersey Blue secured seventh place after a 52-25 victory against Oklahoma.
