With both men’s and women’s wrestling going on in the Dome on Tuesday, we see a mix of international, college and other prominent people in the sport here today.
We need to note two-time World champion and nine-time World medalist Kristie Davis, who is among the coaches with Georgia. Kristie is the head women’s coach at Emmanuel College. A year ago, Davis became only the second woman elected to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. She is also a past WCWA national champion for Oklahoma City, a category we will also open up today.
Davis is not the only family member here, as her husband Link Davis, the head men’s coach at Emmanuel and one of the other Team Georgia coaches, has been here all week.
We had our second Olympic champion in the house, as 2004 Olympic champion and Penn State head wrestling coach Cael Sanderson is here to help coach Bo Nickal in his U23 Special Wrestle-off. Sanderson won four NCAA titles in his undefeated career. Also in Woodley’s corner is Penn State assistant coach Casey Cunningham, himself an NCAA champion for Central Michigan. (Add Nickal and his three NCAA titles to our NCAA champion list).
We can also add an Olympic silver medalist and two-time Olympian in Barry Davis, who was coaching with Wisconsin this weekend. Davis was also a three-time NCAA champion at Iowa.
Another Hall of Famer in the corner in last night’s Junior freestyle competition is Sammie Henson, a World champion and 2000 Olympic silver medalist. Henson was coaching his son Wyatt in the tournament and working with other athletes. Henson also checks the box as a past two-time NCAA champion for Clemson.
Also busy this week has been World bronze medalist Donny Pritzlaff, who is here as an assistant coach for Rutgers. Pritzlaff won a pair of NCAA titles for Wisconsin. Rutgers is a rising program with its first two Div. I champions this year, and was a great host of Final X in June.
World Team member Diana Wesendunk Betanzo, multiple World Teams in the early years of women’s wrestling. She is here supporting her daughter Kristal Betanzo of California in the Junior Nationals. Kristal is a member of the 2019 U.S. Beach World Games team this fall in Qatar.
You see a variety of past Women’s National Team members as part of the state delegations. Notably, we visited with Michaela Hutchison Schmitz with Team Alaska and Na’Tasha Umemoto with Oregon.
Speaking of National Team members, men’s freestyler Dom Bradley was here with Team Missouri as well.
What makes the Junior Women’s Nationals so interesting are all of the former and current college wrestlers who go back to coach and support the girls from their home state. Just a few out there today are former McKendree star Megan Black with Team Iowa, former Oklahoma City wrestler Natala Hinojo of Texas and current Campbellsville wrestler McKayla Campbell with Team Ohio.
There are more women’s college head coaches in the house than those we noted earlier this week, including Jason Moorman of King and Nick Goebel of Tiffin.
With the men’s freestyle events finishing up, we have been around a number of other NCAA Div. I head coaches which we did not yet report, including Neil Erisman (Little Rock), Roger Reina (Penn), Tony Ersland (Purdue), Tim Flynn (West Virginia), Angel Escobedo (Indiana) and Roger Chandler (Michigan State).
We are including college head coaches from other divisions, including Tom Carr of Central Christian College and Kenny Kepley of Pratt Community College, both who coach Team Kansas.
Please also add in college assistant coaches who have been participating this week. Those we haven’t posted are John Hughes (Lehigh), Trevor Brandvold (Minnesota), John Leonardis (Rutgers), Matt McDonough (Wisconsin), Chris Williams (Michigan State), Mike Dixon (Indiana), Kevin Beazley (Old Dominion) and Luke Becker (Minnesota). McDonough and Becker join the NCAA champ list.
In our military wrestler list is Cohlton Raschke, a member of the U.S. Marine Corps wrestling team, who also was a presenter during last night’s finals.
Add another MMA athlete, as Kyle Crutchmer, who just signed with Bellator, is also in the house.
There is one other special hero of note. Freestyle National Team member Richard Perry, who has made an amazing recovery from serious injury in an accident last year, was among the coaches with Team Connecticut. If you saw the gear for Team Connecticut, they said “Perry Strong” in his honor. It was great to see him part of the team from his home state here in Fargo.
