Three U.S. Senior athletes, two in men’s freestyle and one in women’s freestyle, are scheduled to compete in the Grand Prix of Spain this weekend.
2018 World champion Kyle Dake (Ithaca, N.Y/Titan Mercury WC/Finger Lakes RTC) will enter at 79 kg in men’s freestyle.
This is Dake’s first competition since he won the World gold medal in Budapest, Hungary in October of 2018. Dake has recently recovered from an injury which kept him out of competition.
He is scheduled to face 2019 World Team Trials Challenge Tournament champion Alex Dieringer (Stillwater, Okla./Titan Mercury WC/Cowboy RTC) in a Final X Special Wrestle-off in Austin, Texas on August 17. Dake received an extension of his Final X series due to his injury.
Another U.S. men’s freestyle athlete, Josh Rodriguez (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) is scheduled to compete at 57 kg. Rodriguez, a 2019 Pan American Championships gold medalist, placed third at the 2019 World Team Trials Challenge Tournament.
On the women’s freestyle side, Skylar Grote (Newton, N.J./New York AC/Brock WC) is expected to compete at 68 kg. Grote was fourth in the 2019 World Team Trials Challenge Tournament, and also placed fifth at the 2019 U.S. Open.
Dake was a four-time NCAA champion for Cornell, Rodriguez competed for North Dakota State in college, and Grote wrestled collegiately for Brock University in Canada.
The women’s freestyle competition is on Saturday, with the men’s freestyle competition on Sunday. There will be a Greco-Roman division on Friday, but no U.S. athletes are expected to enter.
Madrid is six hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time zone.
