COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The most anticipated of the Greco-Roman finals at the Dave Schultz Memorial International ended quickly on Thursday night.

2017 World Team member Ildar Hafizov scored a 10-0 technical fall over his U.S. Army WCAP teammate Leslie Fuenffinger in 1:01. Hafizov opened up an explosive offense to put away Fuenffinger, who was a 2018 U.S. Open runner-up at this weight class.

In the semifinals, in a rematch of the 2018 U.S. Open finals, Fuenffinger beat 2018 World Team member Dalton Roberts of the New York AC, 9-8. It was the same exact score as last year’s U.S. Open finals, which was won by Roberts, 9-8. Roberts came back to win the bronze medal.

For Hafizov, it was a second career Dave Schultz Memorial gold, to go along with a 2010 Schultz title when he wrestled for Uzbekistan at 55 kg. Hafizov is a naturalized U.S. citizen.

It was a strong night for Team USA in the Greco-Roman division, as all five champions were from the United States.

In the deciding match in the 63 kg roundrobin, 2018 U.S. Open runner-up Sammy Jones of the New York Athletic Club came from behind to defeat two-time Junior World Team member Travis Rice, in a 3-3 criteria decision. Rice jumped to a 3-0 lead, but Jones had a strong second period to score his three points and secure the win.

Two U.S. Marine Corps wrestlers claimed gold medal on Thursday, Jamel Johnson at 67 kg and Raymond Bunker at 72 kg. Both were first-time Schultz champions.

Johnson, a 2012 University World bronze medalist, trailed early in his match against Mostafa Mohammed of Egypt. In the second period, he scored a takedown and two exposure turns, and secured a clutch 5-3 decision. Mohammed trains at Princeton.

Bunker looked strong throughout his match on the way to a 6-2 win over Asror Mukhitdinov of Uzbekistan.

The 55 kg weight class was crazy, with no wrestler finishing the five-athlete roundrobin undefeated. Even though he was pinned in the final round by Dalton Duffield of the New York AC, 2018 U23 World Team member Randon Miranda of the New York AC/NMU-OTS finished with a 3-1 record to claim the gold medal.

Miranda finished with two technical falls and a pin, which gave him the most classification points in the weight class. Duffield finished with a 2-2 record to claim the silver medal and Jerome Carter of the U.S. Marine Corps won the bronze medal with a 2-2 record.

The final five Greco-Roman weight classes will be completed on Friday, 77 kg, 82 kg, 87 kg, 97 kg and 130kg. There will also be some men’s and women’s freestyle contested on Friday.

The entire Dave Schultz Memorial is being broadcast by FloWrestling.
