DORMAGEN, Germany – Whitney Conder (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) claimed a gold medal at 50 kg, helping the United States women’s program finish with nine medals at the Grand Prix of Germany for the weekend.
Conder was impressive in her finals, scoring a 10-0 technical fall over Katharina Baumgartner of Germany. Over the two-day event, Conder had four wins, including victories over two of her top American rivals, Victoria Anthony and Amy Fearnside. Conder is a four-time U.S. World Team member and a past Pan American Games champion.
Conder’s victory brought the U.S. gold-medal haul to three, as Cameron Guerin (Yakima, Wash./TMWC/EAP) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and WCWA national champion Dymond Guilford (Lancaster, Calif./Missouri Baptist WC) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. were champions on Saturday.
Bringing home a silver medal on Sunday at 65 kg/143 lbs. was Amanda Hendey (Colorado Springs, Colo./TMWC), who dropped a 13-2 technical fall bout to past World medalist Braxton Stone of Canada in the finals. Hendey won three straight decisions on Saturday to reach the finals round.
Battling back to win bronze medals for Team USA on Sunday were Victoria Anthony (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) at 50 kg/110 lbs., Mallory Velte (Burnaby, B.C., Canada/TMWC) at 62 kg/136 lbs., Macey Kilty (River Falls, Wisc./Sunkist Kids) at 65 kg/143 lbs. and Julia Salata (Bristol, Tenn./NYAC) at 65 kg/143 lbs.
Anthony, a two-time World Team member, defeated another U.S. athlete, Amy Fearnside, 5-0 to secure her bronze medal.
Velte, who won a World bronze medal in 2018, secured a 10-0 technical fall over Elena Esposito of Italy to reach the podium.
The USA won three of the four medals at 65 kg. Kilty, a 2018 Cadet World champion, dominated Gabrielle Sleisz of Hungary in a 10-0 technical fall for her bronze medal. Salata shut out Nerea Pampin Blanco of Spain, 6-0, for the other bronze.
Add in the silver medal won by Andrea Sennett (Wheeling, Ill./McKendree Bearcat Wrestling) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. on Saturday, and the USA claimed nine medals. In addition, two Americans placed fourth and three from the USA were fifth.
