Beast of the East quarterfinals set

NEWARK, Delaware – The round of 16 has concluded, setting the stage for tomorrow morning’s quarterfinals at the Beast of the East, one of the nation’s top high school tournaments.

The opening rounds provided several big upsets. The most notable occurring at 132 pounds, where unseeded Xavier Arner of Whitehall defeated No. 2 seed Matt Vulakh of Pope John Paul II, 5-1, in the round 32. Arner would fall in his next match to Clayton Gabrielson of McDonogh, 3-0, in the round of 16.

Another notable upset occurred in the 184 pound bracket. Brock Delsignore of Shenendehowa defeated No. 4 seed Nathan Warden of Christiansburg, 5-2, in the round of 16. In his previous match, the unseeded Delsignore earned a 22 second fall over No. 13 seed Josh Brooks of Amherst County.

Throwing a wrinkle in the 138 pound bracket, No. 1 seed Anthony Clark of Delbarton medically forfeited his opening bout. Also, at 152 pounds Travis Mastrogiovanni of Blair Academy, who was seeded No. 2 in the pre-seeds, did enter the tournament.

In addition to missing Mastrogiovanni, Blair is also without the aid of Shayne Van Ness, the No. 1 wrestler in the country at 132 pounds, and Travis’s brother Trevor Mastrogiovanni, who is ranked No. 5 at 126 pounds. Even without some of their lineup’s heaviest hitters, Blair is sitting in first place in the team race with 113.5 points, followed by Brecksville with 99 points and Bergen Catholic with 97.5 points. Blair is looking to claim the team title for the 24th time in the tournament’s 27 year run.

Action will resume tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. ET and will be streamed live on Trackwrestling.
