Semifinals set in Greco-Roman and women’s freestyle at Senior Nationals in Fort Worth, Texas

FORT WORTH, Texas - The first day of the Senior Nationals in the Fort Worth Convention Center featured great action in Greco-Roman and women’s freestyle. The session included the quarterfinals on the championship side, and a few rounds of consolation bouts.
The semifinals pairings were set in both styles, including a number of surprise athletes based upon seeding. All six Greco-Roman Olympic weights were held, while three of the six women’s freestyle weights were contested.
The top five placewinners in each weight class punch their ticket to the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Wrestling at Penn State in April.

GRECO-ROMAN SESSION NOTES
• At 60 kg, No. 13 Lillashawn Coleman defeated fourth-seeded and eight-time age-group World Team member Taylor LaMont pin in the round of 16. Coleman eventually lost in the quarterfinals to No. 5 Dalton Roberts in the quarters.
• The 67 kg bracket was shaken up in the first session of action.
- No. 6 Calvin Germinaro (CYC) had a big morning, taking out 2006 World champion Joe Warren in the round of 16 with a 14-4 tech fall. He continued rolling in the next round, defeating 2019 Junior World bronze medalist Peyton Omania (New York AC), 8-0. Germinaro avenged his two losses to Omania from 2019 Junior World Team Trials.
- Nolan Baker (USOPTC), No. 5, pinned 2019 Final X runner-up Xavier Johnson (Marines), No. 4, in the quarterfinals.
- No. 7 Michael Hooker (Army WCAP) beat No. 2 and Final X runner-up Jamel Johnson (Marines), 7-1, in the quarterfinals.
• At 77 kg, No. 10 seed Jake Fisher (Curby 3 Style), a 2010 World Team member, beat No. 7 seed and 2018 Junior World silver medalist Andrew Berreyesa (New York AC), 3-1. In the quarterfinals, Fisher surpassed No. 2 seed and current National Team member Peyton Walsh, with a 10-2 tech fall.
• There were no surprises at 130 kg as the top-four seeds advanced to the semifinals. Among those semifinalists is 2017 Cadet World champion and two-time Junior World medalist Cohlton Schultz, who is in his true freshman season at Arizona State.
• The two prominent men’s freestyle wrestlers who entered in Greco-Roman were beaten in the early sessions. Jason Chamberlain of the Titan Mercury WC, a 2018 Final X finalist in freestyle, received a No. 13 seed at 67 kg. After winning his first match by fall, Chamberlain fell to No. 4 seed Xavier Johnson of the U.S. Marines in an 8-0 technical fall in the Round of 16. Chamberlain won his consolation match and returns for the evening session.
• Tyler Graff of the Titan Mercury WC, who was fifth in the 2019 World Championships in freestyle, received a No. 15 seed. Graff was beaten in his opening match at 60 kg in Greco-Roman by No. 2 seed and 2019 World Team member Ryan Mango in an 8-0 technical fall. Graff won his first consolation match.
WOMEN’S FREESTYLE SESSION NOTES
• Two-time World bronze medalist Alyssa Lampe of the Sunkist Kids powered to the 50 kg semifinals in her first domestic competition since the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Seeded No. 3, Lampe defeated Natalie Reyna-Rodriguez of McKendree in a 10-0 technical fall in 42 seconds in the quarterfinals. She will face No. 2 Amy Fearnside of the Titan Mercury WC in the semifinals.
• Gracie Figueroa of Titan Mercury WC, who moved up to 57 kg after not making 53 kg this morning, pulled off the biggest early upset when she pinned No. 1 seed and 2012 Olympian Kelsey Campbell of the Sunkist Kids in the round of 32. Trailing 1-0, Figueroa scored a takedown and on the ensuing scramble, got Campbell to her back and secured the fall in 4:54. Figueroa, an age-group World medalist and a 2019 WCWA champion for Menlo, was unseeded at the higher weight class. However, in her next match in the round of 16, Figueroa was defeated 3-1 by Marissa Gallegos of Colorado Mesa. In the quarterfinals, Gallegos was defeated by No. 9 seed Tiana Jackson of Menlo WC, 5-3. Campbell remains alive in the consolation rounds.
• A No. 2 seed was also beaten early, when unseeded Alexia Ward of McKendree Bearcat WC edged No. 2 seed Lauren Louive of the New York AC, 2-2 in the round of 16. Ward lost to No. 7 Cameron Guerin of the Titan Mercury WC in the quarterfinals, 12-3.
• In one of highly anticipated quarterfinals, No. 5 seed and 2018 Cadet World champion Emily Shilson of the Titan Mercury WC scored an impressive 12-1 technical fall over No. 4 seed over Alleida Martinez of the Titan Mercury WC, a 2019 WCWA and NAIA national champion at 50 kg. Shilson wrestles for Augsburg and Martinez for Menlo in college. Shilson now faces No. 1 seed Victoria Anthony of the Sunkist Kids in the semifinals.
