TALLINN, Estonia - 2018 Pan American Junior champion Cameron Caffey (Carbondale, Ill./Michigan State) made a strong run in the Saturday morning repechage rounds at 87 kg/191.5 lbs., before being eliminated in his second match.

Caffey won his first repechage match against Kumar Sunil of India by pin. Right off the bat, Caffey got a funky arm throw for four points on the edge to lead 4-0. India challenged and it was denied, making it 5-0. After a Sunil takedown tightened it to 4-2, Caffey launched Sunil again for four and finished off the fall in 2:29.

In his next bout, he dropped a heartbreaking 8-7 match to Jacob Logaard of Sweden, who was fifth in the 2019 European Junior Championships.

Challenges made a big difference in this match. Logaard jumped to an early 6-2 lead. When Caffey was put down for passivity, Caffey was able to get a two-point counter turn, but Logaard got a reversal and a gutwrench.

The wrestlers went out of bounds, and the officials awarded Logaard a stepout to lead 7-2. Team USA challenged the call, and it was reversed, giving Caffey a four-point throw going out of bounds and tying the bout at 6-6 going into the break.

In the second period, officials waved off a move as a slip throw. However Sweden challenged the call, and it was also reversed, giving Logaard a takedown and an 8-6 lead. Caffey was able to force a stepout to close it to 8-7, but could not score in the final moments.

Had Caffey defeated Logaard, he would have advanced to a bronze medal bout.

Caffey, who competes for Michigan State, was defeated in the first round by 2018 Junior World bronze medalist Ilia Ermolenko of Russia, 10-0. Ermolenko went on to qualify for the finals, which pulled Caffey back into the repechage rounds.

The USA will have two athletes in Saturday’s medal rounds. 2016 Cadet World champion Cohlton Schultz (Parker, Colo./Sunkist Kids/EAP) will go for the gold at 130 kg against 2018 U23 World bronze medalist Aliakbar Hossein Yousofiahmadchali of Iran.

Alston Nutter (Fennimore, Wis./Sunkist Kids/NMU-OTS), competing at 63 kg/139 lbs., dropped his semifinal bout, and qualified for a bronze medal match. His opponent for the bronze bout was determined during Saturday morning’s repechage. He will battle Kamil Czarnecki of Poland, who was ninth in the 2017 European Championships.

The medal match round for the first group of Greco-Roman wrestlers will be held at 6:00 p.m. in Tallinn, which is seven hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time zone.

All of the action is broadcast live by Trackwrestling.
