SOFIA, Bulgaria – The United States collected two silver medals from Cristelle Rodriguez and Skylar Hattendorf on Thursday night in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Rodriguez capped off her international debut with a second-place finish at 49 kg. In her finals match, she fell short against 2018 U15 Asian champion Moe Kiyooka of Japan.
After trailing 1-0 at the break, Rodriguez scored a takedown with a slide-by to take over the lead. Kiyooka later used a pair of go-behinds in the final 40 seconds of the bout to claim the World title with a 5-2 win.
Overall, Rodriguez was impressive, going 3-1 in her international debut with wins over opponents from India, Belarus and Taipei.
Wrestling at 57 kg, Hattendorf also scored a silver for USA. She lost to 2019 Cadet Asian runner-up Ruka Natami of Japan in the gold match.
Natami used a takedown in each period to pick up a 4-0 victory for the gold.
Going 3-1 in her first World Championships, Hattendorf put together a great tournament, registering pins in the quarterfinals and semifinals as well as decision in the first round.
