Coon, Nowry and Perkins win gold at Pan Am Championships in Buenos Aires

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – The USA picked up six medals, including three gold and three silver, on the first day of Greco-Roman competition at the 2019 Pan American Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

One of the highlights of the day came at 130 kg, where 2018 World silver medalist Adam Coon pinned his way to his first Senior Pan Am title.

Coming off two falls in the morning session, Coon faced Luciano Del Rio from Argentina in the 130 kg final. Trailing 1-0 after getting hit with passivity, Coon forced Del Rio to his back and was awarded the pin at the 1:59-mark for his third pin of the day.

(Strong candidate for OW, but that will be decided tomorrow after the entire Greco tournament is complete.)

Max Nowry and RaVaughn Perkins also finished with gold medals after going undefeated in round-robin action.

At 55 kg, Nowry completed a perfect outing, finishing off the day with an 8-0 tech fall over host country Argentina’s Marcelo Torres. Nowry scored quickly on a takedown and turn and immediately picked up four more points on a takedown and turn for an 8-0 tech fall in 34 seconds.

In a three-man bracket at 72 kg, Perkins locked up the title in the first session, wrestling his only two matches this morning. Therefore, he did not wrestle in the evening session. Earlier in the day, he recorded a fall and a tech fall.

Silver medals came from Ryan Mango, Ellis Coleman and G’Angelo Hancock.

Coming out of a round-robin bracket, Mango, the 2018 Pan Am champ, took second at 63 kg. In the finals, Mango dropped a 9-0 bout to Andres Montano Arroyo to finish the day with a 2-1 record.

After a strong morning session, Coleman battled World and Olympic champion Ismael Borrero Molina of Cuba for the crown at 67 kg. Coleman came out with power, but it was Borrero Molina who took the win, 11-1.

2016 Junior World bronze medalist Hancock battled Cuba’s Gabriel Rosillo Kindelan, the returning Pan American champion. The Cuban got off to a hot start and went on to win, 10-2. Hancock’s silver is his second Senior Pan Am medal. In 2017, Hancock won Pan Am bronze.

At 60 kg, Dalton Roberts took fifth, which eventually earned a qualifying spot for the 2019 Pan American Games in August.
