Colon, Clark, Sorensen, Mensah-Stock win bronze medals in Poland

WARSAW, Poland - The United States wrapped up the international competitions in Poland this weekend with four bronze medals on Sunday.


Winning bronze medals in men’s freestyle in the Pytlasinski Memorial International were Joe Colon (Fresno, Calif./Titan Mercury WC/Valley RTC) at 61 kg , Cory Clark (Iowa City, Iowa/Titan Mercury WC/Hawkeye WC) at 61 kg and Brandon Sorensen (Iowa City, Iowa/Titan Mercury WC/Hawkeye WC) at 70 kg.


Adding a bronze medals in women’s freestyle at the Poland Open was 2018 World Team member Tamyra Mensah-Stock (Colorado Springs, Colo./Titan Mercury WC/OTC) at 68 kg.


Colon, a Freestyle National Team member who was a star for Northern Iowa, scored an 11-0 technical fall over Pingping Zhou of China in the bronze-medal bout. Colon rebounded from a quarterfinal loss to Kuat Amirtayev of Kazakhstan on Saturday.


Scoring a pushout with about 25 seconds to go in the match, Sorensen stopped Norbert Lukacs of Hungary, 3-2. The former Iowa star went 1-1 on Saturday, falling in the semifinals in a close bout to Amandyk Bakeyev of Kazakhstan, 5-4


Clark won a repechage match Sunday morning against Yo Nakata of Japan, with a pin in 1:13. He won his bronze-medal match by forfeit over Magomedrasul Idrisov of Russia.


Mensah-Stock claimed her bronze-medal bout with a 5-0 win over Alla Belinska of Ukraine. She went 2-1 on Saturday, with two strong wins before dropping her semifinal match to Dalma Caneva of Italy by fall.


Another 2018 World Team member, Sarah Hildebrandt (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC/OTC) finished fifth at 53 kg, after dropping her bronze-medal bout to Maria Prevolaraki of Greece, 12-10.


In Greco-Roman, the lone U.S. wrestler in competition on Sunday, Joe Rau (Chicago, Ill./Minnesota Storm/Chicago RTC) was defeated in repechage by Tadeusz Michalak of Poland, 6-2 at 87 kg.


Overall, the USA won seven medals during the events in Poland. On Saturday, the USA got a Greco-Roman gold from 2018 World Team member G’Angelo Hancock at 97 kg, a freestyle silver medal from Sammy Brooks at 86 kg, and a pair of women’s freestyle bronzes from Whitney Conder at 53 kg and Forrest Molinari at 65 kg.
