BUDAPEST, Hungary – Russia claimed two Greco-Roman World champs and are in first place of the team race in the penultimate day of the 2018 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

In the team race, Russia enters the final day with 103 points, which is 28 more than second-place Turkey. Russia will have a wrestler in all three of Sunday’s gold-medal bouts.

Gold medalists for Russia on Saturday night came at 60 kg and 67 kg.

At 60 kg, 2017 U23 World silver medalist Sergey Emelin of Russia ran away with gold, picking up a technical fall against 2012 Junior World silver medalist Victor Ciobanu of Moldova in 3:30.

Emelin scored early with a four-point throw in the first 15 seconds to take a 4-0 lead into the break. In the Emelin tacked on six more points in the first 30 seconds of the second period to finish off a 10-1 tech fall.

Winning at 67 kg was two-time World bronze medalist Artem Surkov, who dominated 2016 Olympic champion and 2014 World champion Davor Stefanek of Serbia.

Surkov led 1-0 at the break, but quickly separated himself in the second period as Stefaek was put down for passivity and Surkov got a big lift for four points. Stefanek then challenged the call, but it failed, giving Surkov another point. The Russian went on to win the bout, 7-0, for his first World title.

Not to be overlooked was Metehan Basar of Turkey, who repeated as World champion on Saturday, taking out 2016 Olympic silver medalist and 2015 World champion Zhan Beleniuk of Ukraine int the 87 kg gold-medal match.

With all the bout’s points scored on passivity, Basar, who trailed at the break, 1-0, drew two passivity calls from Beleniuk in the second period for an eventual 2-1 win and his second World title.

As it is the final day of the competition, the schedule is different.

Repechage will begin at 1:30 p.m. local time (7:30 a.m. ET) with the medal matches following at 3:30 p.m. (9:30 a.m. ET). Fans can watch all the action live on Trackwrestling.com.
