NEW YORK, N.Y. – It was a strong day for U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers, who won seven of the 10 weight classes at the Bill Farrell Memorial International on Friday afternoon.
The Outstanding Wrestler in Greco-Roman was Randon Miranda of the New York AC/NMU, who won a four-athlete round-robin at 60 kg to earn his gold medal, finishing with a 3-0 record. In the deciding third match, Miranda edged long-time teammate and regular rival Dalton Roberts in the finals, 6-5. In November, Roberts beat Miranda to earn a spot on the U.S. U23 World Team.
“We are competitive people. In the room, we wrestle often and train together. He is a great competitor. Today it came down to, I don’t know, preparation, but I felt really well and wrestled a great match today,” said Miranda.
One of the most entertaining finals came at 77 kg, when 2017 Junior World champion Kamal Bey of the Sunkist Kids scored a 13-4 technical fall over Jesse Porter of the NYAC/NMU. Porter came out with a big throw against Bey, but the momentum changed as Bey got a few of his own big tosses in a very physical and athletic performance by both wrestlers.
“All I know is he got a really good throw in the beginning. He caught me off my high dive and was in perfect position. I give him a lot of respect. He comes out here and every time we wrestle, there is going to be fireworks. It’s going to be a scrap. We have a pretty good rivalry, which is right now in my favor. If I don’t keep up with what I am doing, he will catch me. He is that type of person,” said Bey.
The U.S. Army had a pair of individual champions, Hayden Tuma at 63 kg and Lucas Sheridan at 97 kg. Tuma, a 2017 U.S. Open champion who has been injured since last spring, opened up his offense in a 9-0 technical fall over Hasan Mustafa of Egypt in the finals. Sheridan, also who had some time away from competition, lit up the scoreboard with a 10-0 technical fall over Je Woo Park of Korea in just 1:48.
One of the most intense finals was at 72 kg, where 2017 U23 World Team member Alejandro Sancho of the NYAC edged 2016 World Team member Chris Gonzalez of the NYAC, 3-2. Gonzalez tied the match at 2-2 with less than 20 seconds left when Sancho was hit with a passivity penalty, and held the tiebreaker. Sancho forced a step out with just one second left on the clock to secure the victory.
The other individual champions from the USA were Elijah Varona of the Garage Boys at 55 kg and Raymond Bunker of the U.S. Marines at 67 kg.
Varona defeated Sean Sesnan of Williams Baptist, 8-0 in just 58 seconds for his victory. Bunker had the only offensive attacks in a 4-0 victory over Jessy Williams of the NYAC in his finals bout.
There were three champions from international competitors in the draw, Aliaksandr Kikiniou of Belarus at 82 kg, Mohamed Moustafa of Egypt at 87 kg and Ham Mustafa of Egypt at 130 kg. All three beat American wrestlers in the finals.
The Greco-Roman event was held alongside the women’s freestyle tournament, which will be covered in another feature. The tournament concludes on Saturday with the men’s freestyle division. All of the action is being broadcast live and also archived by FloWrestling.
