Strong U.S. team set, and match schedule published for Women’s World Cup in Takasaki, Japan, Mar. 17-18

The United States will have a strong and experienced team heading to the 2018 Women’s World Cup, held in Takasaki, Japan, Mar. 17-18. The World Cup is the annual international dual meet championships, featuring the top eight nations in the world.
Leading the team is three-time World champion and five-time World medalist Adeline Gray (Kingston, Pa. /New York AC), who will compete at 76 kg/167.5 lbs. Gray is also a 2016 Olympian.
Two-time World silver medalist and five-time World Team member Alli Ragan (Colorado Springs, Colo. /Sunkist Kids/OTC) will compete at 59 kg/130 lbs. Ragan was a two-time Junior World bronze medalist.
2016 Olympian and 2017 World Team member Haley Augello (Lockport, Ill. /New York AC) will compete at 53 kg/116.5 lbs. Augello is a past Cadet World champion.
2017 World bronze medalist Becka Leathers (Grays Harbor, Wash./ Titan Mercury) will wrestle for the U.S. at 55 kg/121.2 lbs. Leathers was a 2015 Junior World bronze medalist.
2017 U.S. World Team member and two-time Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix champion Tamyra Mensah (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Titan Mercury WC) will be competing for the U.S. at 68 kg/ 150 lbs.
Two-time Senior World Team member and two-time Junior World champion Victoria Anthony (Tempe, Ariz. /Sunkist Kids) will compete at 50 kg/110 lbs. 2017 World team member and 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials runner-up Victoria Francis (Colorado Springs, Colo. /Titan Mercury) will be competing at 72 kg/158.7 lbs. Francis was a 2014 Junior World bronze medalist.
2016 U.S. World Team member Sarah Hildebrandt (Colorado Springs, Colo. /New York AC/OTC) is entered at 53 kg/116.8 lbs. In addition, 2017 U.S. World Team member Mallory Velte (Sacramento, Calif. / Titan Mercury WC) is on the team at 62 kg/136.6 lbs.
Rounding out the U.S. lineup are Erin Golston (Colorado Springs, Colo. /NYAC) at 50 kg/110 lbs., Jacarra Winchester (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Titan Mercury WC / OTC) at 55 kg/121.2 lbs., Kayla Miracle (Campbellsville, Ky. / Sunkist Kids) at 59 kg/130 lbs., Forrest Molinari (Colorado Springs, Colo. /Titan Mercury WC) at 65 kg /143.3 lbs. and Julia Salata (Bristol, Tenn. / New York AC) at 65 kg/143.3 lbs.
“Japan has been the team to beat. They have set the standard in the sport. There is no tougher teams than Japan, China and Mongolia. We just need to be ready to compete. Where we meet individual teams just doesn’t matter. We are not going to Japan to be a part of the mix; we are going to Japan to come out of there with a World Cup title and be the best we can be. We have to focus on ourselves and what we need to do as we prepare ourselves to go in there with the best results possible,” said National Women’s Coach Terry Steiner.
The United States drew into Pool A, where it will face Japan, Canada and Sweden. The teams in Pool B are Belarus, Romania, China and Mongolia.
United World Wrestling has published the round-by-round schedule of the Women’s World Cup. On Saturday, March 17, the United States opens against Canada in the 9:00 a.m. session, then takes on Sweden in the 11:30 a.m. session. In the 5:00 p.m. session, the U.S. finishes its pool competition against host Japan.
The opponent for Team USA during the medal rounds on Sunday, March 18 will be determined based upon the pool competition results.
The United States is seeking its first Women’s World Cup victory since 2003, when the United States defeated Japan in the championship finals dual meet, 14-13.
U.S. fans can watch the Women’s World Cup live on Trackwrestling. Takasaki is 14 hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time.
