ISTANBUL, Turkey – Team USA went 2-1 in the opening session of the 2018 Yasar Dogu International, which began on Friday.
Winning first round bouts were 2017 World silver medalist Thomas Gilman (Iowa City, Iowa/Titan Mercury WC/Hawkeye WC) at 57 kg, as well as David Taylor (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) at 86 kg.
Gilman was able to get his offense rolling in his opener against 2013 World University Games bronze medalist Berdakh Primbayev of Kazakhstan, emerging with an 11-3 win.
Gilman moves into the quarterfinals, where he will battle Suleyman Atli of Turkey.
Taylor also had an impressive opening win, securing a pin in 4:37 over 2017 U23 World silver medalist Azamat Dauletbekov of Kazakhstan. Taylor was scored upon first, but Taylor reeled off the next 10 points. In the second period, he was able to secure a pin over Dauletbekov near the edge of the mat on a scramble.
Next up for Taylor in the quarterfinals is 2017 World silver medalist Boris Makoev of Slovakia.
2016 World champion Logan Stieber (Columbus, Ohio, Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC) was beaten in his first match by 2011 World bronze medalist Daulet Niyazbekov of Kazakhstan, 6-4 at 65 kg. Niyazbekov scored the first three takedowns of the match. Stieber closed the lead with two second-period takedowns but could not overcome the deficit.
Stieber’s fate will be determined by Niyazbekov, a three-time Asian champion, who must reach the finals to pull Stieber back into repechage.
The other two U.S. wrestlers, Olympic and multiple World champions Jordan Burroughs (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids/Nebraska WTC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Kyle Snyder, Columbus, Ohio (Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC) at 97 kg/213.75 lbs., did not compete in the first session, and will have their openers in the second session.
In addition to this serving as a tune-up event for Team USA, the defending World Team champions, it also serves as a UWW ranking tournament, which determines seeds at October’s World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
The next session times on Friday is at 4:00 p.m. Istanbul time. This is seven hours ahead of the U.S. Eastern time zone. (9 a.m. ET)
The entire Yasar Dogu International will be streamed live FREE on Trackwrestling.com, where bracket sheets will also be held.
