ISTANBUL, Turkey – The entire 2018 U.S. Senior World Team in men’s freestyle will compete at the 2018 Yasar Dogu International, which runs July 26-28.
In addition to this serving as a tune-up event for Team USA, the defending World Team champions, it also serves as a UWW ranking tournament, which determines seeds at October’s World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Right off the bat, the U.S. will send five wrestlers to the mat on Friday, who have won a combined two Olympic golds, seven World golds, 10 World medals and 11 NCAA titles.
At this time, USA Wrestling has received the draw numbers for all athletes who weighed in to compete. However, because host Turkey can only enter three athletes per weight class, some of their wrestlers will have to wrestle-off on Friday morning to determine which Turks are in the draw. (This is similar to what happened at the Yarygin Grand Prix in Russia earlier this season). The weigh-ins for each weight are on Friday morning.
Therefore, until the official brackets are posted, we will not speculate what athletes the USA wrestlers will draw until it becomes official. When we get the first-round opponents, we will update this story.
Included in the first day field are 2012 Olympic champion Jordan Burroughs (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids/Nebraska WTC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and 2016 Olympic champion Kyle Snyder (Columbus, Ohio/Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC) at 97 kg/213.75 lbs. Burroughs has also won four World gold medals and Snyder has also won two World gold medals.
Burroughs is in a weight class with 18 athletes, including four from Turkey. Included in the draw is two-time World champion Frank Chamizo of Italy.
Snyder has 14 athletes in his weight, including two from Turkey. Another Olympic champion, Sharif Sharifov of Azerbaijan, is in this weight class.
2016 World champion Logan Stieber (Columbus, Ohio/Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC) will compete at 65 kg/143 lbs., a weight with 20 athletes including five from Turkey.
2017 World silver medalist Thomas Gilman (Iowa City, Iowa/Titan Mercury WC/Hawkeye WC) gets started at 57 kg/125.5 lbs., a weight with 17 athletes, including four from Turkey.
David Taylor (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC), who is on his first Senior World Team this year, is a two-time World Cup champion and will battle at 86 kg/189 lbs. His weight features 16 athletes, including three from Turkey.
The tournament will be held over three days, with each group of five weight classes having a two-day tournament. On Friday, the tournament will advance to the semifinals in the first five weights. This group of athletes will have their medal rounds on Saturday night in Istanbul.
Session times on Friday are 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Istanbul time. This is seven hours ahead of the U.S. Eastern time zone.
The entire Yasar Dogu International will be streamed live FREE on Trackwrestling.com. There will also be live results posted by TrackWrestling.
