2018 UWW Cadet World champions Emily Shilson of Minnesota and Macey Kilty of Wisconsin were among the X returning champions who advanced to Wednesday’s semifinals at the U.S. Marine Corps Junior Women’s Nationals on Tuesday with quarterfinal wins.
Shilson, ranked No. 1 in the USA, posted a 12-2 technical fall over Florida’s Jessica Corredor in the quarterfinals. Her semifinal opponent will be Sami Sarabay of Hawaii
Kilty had little trouble in her quarterfinal, getting a 12-0 technical fall over Alexis Bernal of Indiana. She faces Lena Flanagan of Washington in the semifinal round.
Shilson and Kilty were among nine returning Junior Nationals champions who won in the quarterfinals and advanced to the semifinal round.
The other 2017 Junior champions to advance were Vayle Baker of Pennsylvania (117), Alisha Howk of Wisconsin (122), , Alexandria Liles of Colorado (132), Emma Bruntil of Washington (138), Jayden Laurent of Wisconsin (144), Sidney Kimber of Alaska (164) and Alexandra Castillo of California (200).
Of the returning champions, Bruntil faces one of the toughest semifinals, battling two-time UWW Cadet World medalist Alara Boyd of Indiana.
Kimber also has a tough challenge in the next round, facing 2018 Cadet Nationals champion and 2018 UWW Cadet World Team member Tristan Kelly of Colorado in the semifinals.
Two of the seven 2017 Junior National runners-up in the draw were beaten. At 132 pounds, Abnelis Yambo of Florida stopped returning runner-up Breanna Douglas of Kansas, 15-9. At 180 pounds, in the round of 16, Faith Tuttle of Minnesota won by injury default over returning runner-up Jasmin Clark of California (180).
This is the largest Junior Women’s National Championships in history, and is regarded as the strongest as well, with most of the top high school girls in the nation in attendance to test themselves against the best.
For example, 22 states have placed at least one athlete in the semifinals, a sign of the expanded depth in the nation. Returning national champion California has the most with eight semifinalists, followed by Washington with seven and Colorado with six.
The semifinals will be held in the morning session, which begins at 9:00 a.m., with the finals set for 1:30 p.m., with all of the action live on FloWrestling.
