2016 Olympic champion and two-time World champion Helen Maroulis (New York, N.Y./Sunkist Kids) defeated two-time World champion Vanesa Kaladzinskaya of Belarus, 5-4, leading her Haryana Hammers team to a 5-4 win over UP Dangal in the India Professional Wrestling League semifinals.
The Haryana Hammers will face the NCR Punjab Royals in the championship finals on Friday. The NCR Punjab Royals defeated the Veer Marathas, 6-3 in the other semifinal dual meet on Wednesday.
Maroulis, the only American in the league this year, did not compete in the last two Haryana Hammers dual meets for medical reasons, but returned for the semifinals to win a clutch match for her team. Maroulis led 3-0 at the break and went on to close out the win in the second period.
Maroulis won her 2017 World gold medal at 58 kg, while Kaladzinskaya was the 2017 World champion at 53 kg.
Other winners for the Haryana Hammers on Thursday were Olympic and World champion Vladimir Khinchegashvili of Georgia (men’s 57 kg), World champion Khetag Tsabolov of Russia (men’s 76 kg), World champion Sun Yanan of China (women’s 50 kg) and Roubejit Singh Rangi of India (men’s 92 kg).
In the finals showdown on Friday, Maroulis may draw Pooja Dhanda of India, who scored a 7-6 win over Maroulis in the regular season dual meet on January 16.
There were six teams in the India Pro League, with the top four reaching the playoffs. In the regular season dual meets, only seven of the nine weights were contested. However, in the playoffs, all nine weights are included in the dual meet.
In the first season of the India Pro League, three-time World champion Adeline Gray led the Mumbai team to the team title. On Friday, Maroulis will have an opportunity to do the same for her Haryana squad.
