The U.S. is gearing up for one of its most anticipated international freestyle tours of the year as 23 athletes, both men and women, travel to Krasnoyarsk, Russia, for the highly-competitive Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix at the end of the month.
The face of American wrestling, two-time World champion and Olympic champion Kyle Snyder (Woodbine, Md./Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC), headlines a wildly deep U.S. lineup that features four World medalists, three Olympians, nine past World Team members and several other proven performers.
Snyder became the 11th American male to win the Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix last year. He returns to Krasnoyarsk competing at 97 kg/213 lbs., with aspirations of becoming the first man to win it for a second time.
Also looking to defend a title at this prestigious event is 2017 U.S. World Team member Tamyra Stock (Colorado Springs, Colo./Titan Mercury WC), who took the 69 kg/152 lbs. crown in women’s freestyle last year. She became the sixth U.S. woman to achieve the feat. Stock will compete at 68 kg/149 lbs. this go around.
Reigning World bronze medalist Nick Gwiazdowski (Raleigh, N.C./Titan Mercury WC/Wolfpack RTC) and 2016 World champion Logan Stieber (Columbus, Ohio/Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC) will test their skills at 125 kg/275 lbs. and 65 kg/143 lbs., respectively. Two-time World silver medalist Alli Ragan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids), the lone American World medalist on the women’s side, is entered at 59 kg/130 lbs.
Rio Olympians Frank Molinaro (Blacksburg, Va./Titan Mercury WC/Southeast RTC) and Haley Augello (Lockport, Ill./New York AC) are expected to be top contenders. Now up at 70 kg/154 lbs., Molinaro will see his first action since finishing in second place at last year’s U.S. World Team Trials. Augello, who finished in eighth place at the 2017 World Championships in Paris, is set to go at 53 kg/116 lbs.
Additional past U.S. World Team members taking on the Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix are Tony Ramos (Chapel Hill, N.C./Sunkist Kids/Tar Heel WC) at 61 kg/134 lbs., Zach Rey (Northampton, Pa./Lehigh Valley WC) at 125 kg and Victoria Anthony (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) at 50 kg/110 lbs.
U.S. World Team Trials runners-up Kyle Dake (Ithaca, N.Y./Titan Mercury WC/Finger Lakes WC) and David Taylor (State College, Pa./Titan Mercury WC/Nittany Lion WC) have proven to be top international contenders. Dake will move up to 79 kg/174 lbs. for the event, his first tournament at the new weight class. Taylor is looking to expand on his international credentials highlighted by an undefeated World Cup run.
NCAA champions Cory Clark (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC), Alex Dieringer (Stillwater, Okla./Titan Mercury WC) and Jayson Ness (Bloomington, Minn./Minnesota Storm), plus Cadet World bronze medalist Jacob Warner (Washington, Ill./Hawkeye WC), will have their opportunities to make some noise as well.
The Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix is the first major men’s freestyle ranking event of 2018 for United World Wrestling. Athletes who place in the top five of their respective weight class will earn ranking points attributed toward seeding for the World Championships. Champions earn eight points, silver medalists earn six points, bronze medalists earn four points and fifth place finishers earn two points for this event.
The competition will run January 26-28 and will feature both men’s and women’s freestyle brackets each of the three days. Action will begin at 11 a.m. local time (11 p.m. ET) each day and will be streamed live at unitedworldwrestling.org.
