Kelsey Campbell wins silver at Cerro Pelado in Cuba
by Richard Immel, USA Wrestling
HAVANA, Cuba – The U.S. grabbed a silver medal from Kelsey Campbell to wrap up women’s freestyle at the Cerro Pelado International.
Campbell faced off against Dayselis Rodriguez of Cuba for the 59 kg/130 lbs. gold medal. Rodriguez converted on two first-period takedowns out of a front headlock position to lead 4-0 at the break. Campbell climbed back into it with a late takedown but ran out of time. She fell 4-3.
It was Campbell’s first competition since the U.S. World Team Trials held in Las Vegas last April. She finished with a 2-1 record over the two-day tournament, scoring day one wins over Debora Lawnitzak of Germany and Rachelis Caron of Cuba.
After suffering a shoulder injury yesterday, Arian Carpio did not finish out the competition and wound up in fifth place at 57 kg/125 lbs. Carpio was the only American entered in the field outside of Campbell.
Host-nation Cuba dominated the team race, winning gold in six-of-eight contested weight classes. Betzabeth Arguello Villegas of Venezuela and Alejandra Romero of Mexico were the only non-Cuban women to earn gold.
The Cerro Pelado International continues on Wednesday with the opening of men’s freestyle at 10 a.m. (ET).
