In battle of talented women's programs, Menlo beat Emmanuel 34-11 on Wednesday

ATHERTON, Calif. – Fresh off their first-ever #1 ranking in the NAIA, Menlo Women's Wrestling (ranked 6th in the WCWA) took on NCAA DII opponent Emmanuel College in dual action on Wednesday night. This marked the first-ever matchup between the two schools, with the Oaks still wrestling with a chip on their shoulder, as the Lions came in ranked 4th in the WCWA. That might change before too long, as the Oaks downed the Lions 34-11 in dual action to pick up a huge win inside in a raucous Haynes-Prim Pavilion.
Menlo took the entire dual by the horns from the very beginning, winning eight of ten matches on the night. Four of those eight victories came via match termination or fall, highlighted by the early pin from Alleida Martinez. She is ranked first in the NAIA and showed why, taking down Clare Garcia of the Lions in just 1:50 in the 109 matchup. Her high school teammate, first-ranked Gracie Figueroa, took care of business in the 116 match, defeating 7th-ranked Kacey Baynon 10-0.
The Oaks ended the evening on a high note as well, with a pair of contests that ended in blowouts. Precious Bell is ranked first in the NAIA and she dominated Felicity Bryant to a 12-1 tech fall victory. Emily Sandoval followed suit, ranked fourth in the WCWA and didn't let Mia Leon score in a 10-0 tech fall.
The highlight of the night, however, came in the 155 match, as Iman Kazem (1st in the NAIA) was in a wild contest against Hannah Gladden (2nd in the WCWA). The two traded points via takedowns until the final minutes, with Gladden in position to win the match, having a 9-6 advantage on a late takedown. With five seconds left, Gladden backed off, and Kazem went down low quickly and upended Gladden to earn a four-point takedown as the horn sounded to end the match. Haynes-Prim Pavilion went wild as Kazem earned a 10-9 victory, a win that ensured the Oaks would win the dual.
Other Oaks to pick up victories on the night were Hiba Salem (10-4 over Angelina Gomez), Tiana Jackson (10-3 over Alexandra Herle) and Shelly Avelino (16-8 over Caitlin Cardenas).
The Oaks will take this momentum to NorCal this weekend as they participate in the West Coast Tournament of Champions. The event will begin at 9:00 am in Rocklin, and the Oaks will take on several of the top teams in the nation including Simon Fraser and these same Emmanuel College Lions.
