The stage is set for the fifth annual Who’s # 1 showdown that will feature 10 bouts between top high school talents as they battle it out with a No. 1 ranking on the line.

Flowrestling has pieced together perhaps its best lineup to date for the premier preseason event to be held at Grace Hall on the campus of Lehigh University on October 8.

Of the 22 athletes taking part in this year’s edition, six have won a medal at the Cadet World Championships, 10 have been a member of at least one U.S. Cadet World Team and two have seen action as part of the U.S. Junior World Team. Moreover, 18 of the competitors have earned All-American status at the USAW Cadet and Junior Nationals held in Fargo, N.D. each summer, with 11 of these athletes owning at least one first-place finish in Fargo.

In a Who’s #1 first, two of the nation’s best women’s wrestlers will be showcased. It will be a battle of Cadet World bronze medalists as Gracie Figueroa of California and Macey Kilty of Wisconsin are set to meet at 125 pounds. Figueroa has made four U.S. World Teams between the Cadet and Junior divisions, and is a five-time Fargo champion. Kilty is a three-time Fargo champion and elevated her status by capturing both the Cadet and Junior crown at the event this summer.

The first bout of the evening is a dandy. Two-time Cadet World champion Kurt McHenry of Virginia will take on past Cadet and Junior World Team member Malik Heinselman of Colorado for the No. 1 ranking at 113 pounds. Both men competed recently at World Championship events, McHenry securing his second Cadet World gold in Athens, Greece, and Heinselman representing the U.S. at the Junior World Championships in Tampere, Finland.

New York’s Jacori Teemer and Pennsylvania’s Gavin Hoffman recently claimed bronze medals at the Cadet World Championships alongside McHenry. Teemer, a 2016 Cadet Nationals champion, will meet three-time Ohio state champion Mitch Moore at 138 pounds. Hoffman will challenge in-state rival and current No. 1 Michael Beard at 195 pounds.

Electric Ohio talent David Carr, who was a Cadet World bronze medalist in 2016, stands opposite Indiana’s Joe Lee at 160 lbs. The two have a fierce rivalry brewing after several meetings in the past year. Most recently, Carr topped Lee at the Junior Nationals on his way to a championship finish. Lee wound up in third place at the event.

New Jersey’s Robert Howard, Pennsylvania’s Gavin Teasdale and Arizona’s Roman Bravo-Young have all made the Cadet World Team in year’s past and are the favorite by ranking in their respective matchups.

Howard, who is fresh off a trip to Athens, looks to defend his No. 1 ranking against Junior Nationals champion Patrick McKee of Minnesota at 120 pounds. McKee slots in at No. 4 in the FloRankings.

Teasdale qualified for the Cadet World Team in 2014 and 2015, and was a Junior Nationals champion in 2016. After Cadet World Team member and current No. 1 at the weight Jordan Decatur was forced to pull from the event due to injury, Junior Nationals All-American and third-ranked Pat Glory of New Jersey was named as the replacement to face second-ranked Teasdale.

A four-time Cadet Nationals champion and Cadet World Team representative in 2016, Bravo-Young holds the No. 1 spot at 132 pounds. He will be tested by four-time Florida state champion Joey Silva next weekend.

At 170 pounds, Pennsylvania’s Trent Hidlay and Florida’s Julian Ramirez will duke it out in a matchup of past Fargo finalists.

Indiana’s second-ranked Brayton Lee, who has finished in third place at the Junior Nationals, Cadet Nationals and UWW Cadet Nationals in recent years, will take on No. 6 Justin McCoy of Pennsylvania at 152 lbs. Lee was originally slated to face Cadet World champion and No. 1 Will Lewan of Illinois.

The final match of the event will see Florida’s Anthony Artalona and Pennsylvania’s Sammy Sasso go at it for all the marbles at 145 pounds. Artalona has won two titles at both the Cadet Nationals and Junior Nationals. Sasso is a perennial All-American in Fargo, owning a Cadet freestyle title from 2015.

Who’s #1 will be broadcast live on Flowrestling.org next Sunday. In order to view the highly-anticipated meet, one must be a member of Flowrestling’s FloPro premium service.

Tickets for the event are still available through the Lehigh University website.
