PLOVDIV, Bulgaria - Norman Manning of Simpsonville, S.C., won a silver medal at 70 kg in men’s freestyle on the final day of competition at the Veterans World Championships on Sunday.

Manning got on a strong early run, winning his first three matches. He opened with a 3-2 win over Airam Gonzalez Garcia of Spain, 3-2. In the quarterfinals, he pinned Aslambek Ezerkhanov of Russia in 3:58. He advanced to the finals with a 6-4 semifinal win over Bulent Hikmet of Turkey, 6-4.

In the gold-medal match, Manning was defeated by Koji Furusato of Japan by technical fall, 10-0, earning the only medal for Team USA on Sunday.

It was Manning’s second Veterans World medal of the week, after claiming a bronze medal in Greco-Roman on Friday.

Two U.S. wrestlers placed fifth after dropping bronze-medal bouts, Jeffery Estrada of Parker, Colo. (Div. A at 78 kg) and Karl Junitz of Batavia, Ill. (Div. A at 100 kg).

Manning’s silver medal gave Team USA 13 men’s freestyle medals. Add in the seven Greco-Roman medals, and Team USA accumulated 20 Veterans Worlds medals in 2017.

The United States leaves Plovdiv with two individual World champions, George Porter of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. in Div. C at 130 kg in men’s freestyle and Hedj Nelson of Colville, Wash. in Div. E at 62 kg in Greco-Roman.
