Bors wins silver, Porter gets bronze in Greco-Roman at Veterans Worlds in Bulgaria

PLOVDIV, Bulgaria – Two U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers won medals on the second day of the Veterans World Championships on Wednesday.
Capturing a silver medal at 100 kg in Div. C was Gelu Bors of Henderson, Nev. Competing in a five-athlete round robin, Bors finished the tournament with a 3-1 record, scoring two technical falls and a decision.
He scored victories over Hassan Zareei of Iran, Hristo Gabrovski of Bulgaria and Zelijko Jovisic of Serbia. His only loss came against Nikolai Kashinov of Bulgaria, the eventual champion.
Winning a bronze medal at 130 kg in Div. C was George Porter of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., who pinned Aru Vatja of Finland in his bronze-medal bout. Porter opened the tournament with a loss to Thomas Summ of Germany, who finished with a silver medal.
Placing fifth after dropping a bronze-medal bout was Joe Raia of South Elgin, Ill., who competed at 62 kg in Div. C. Raia opened with a win over Kai Martti Koivunen of Finland, then dropped consecutive bouts to Nurzhan Nurbekov of Kazakhstan and Ali Reza Sharifi Darani of Iran. His bronze-medal bout loss to Darani was a tight 1-0 decision.
There were 10 U.S. athletes competing on Wednesday, either in Div. C or Div. D.
After two days, the USA has won five Veterans World medals in Greco-Roman. On Tuesday, Hedj Nelson of Colville, Wash. won a gold medal (62 kg Div. E), Octavius Bellamy of Bolingbrook, Ill. won a silver medal (100 kg in Div. B) and Bruce Moe of Hillsboro, N.D. won a bronze medal (78 kg Div. E).
The competition continues on Thursday, with Greco-Roman action in Div. A, as six U.S. wrestlers hit the mat. The first-round draws for the U.S. athletes is below.
Freestyle competition will follow on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
