COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The United States had a strong day of wrestling on day one of the women’s freestyle competition at the 20th Dave Schultz Memorial International at the U.S. Olympic Training Center on Thursday, pushing 12 athletes into the finals.

There were six past U.S. Senior World or Olympic team members who became finalists, setting up a high-quality finals for Friday night’s final round.

In a battle of 2017 U.S. World Team teammates, Tamyra Mensah-Stock of the Titan Mercury WC scored a 10-0 technical fall over Victoria Francis of the Titan Mercury WC in the semifinals at 76 kg. Mensah-Stock scored eight quick points, getting a takedown and three ankle laces early in the match, and closed it out with a takedown.

Mensah-Stock advanced to the final where she will face three-time World champion and five-time World medalist Adeline Gray of the New York AC. Gray, also a 2016 Olympian, missed the 2017 season due to injury recovery, and made her return to competition on Sunday in a USA vs. Japan dual meet in Los Angeles.

At the 2017 World Championships in Paris, France, Mensah-Stock competed at 69 kg, while Francis was up at 75 kg. The athletes have trained together often at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

Another member of the 2017 U.S. World Team, Mallory Velte of the Titan Mercury WC, advanced to the 65 kg finals with a 7-3 win over Desiree Zavala of the Chocker WC. It will be an all-American final, as Forrest Molinari of Titan Mercury WC will be her opponent, after pinning Eun-Sil Jang of Korea in the semifinals in 1:19. Velte competes for Simon Fraser University, while Molinari is a grad of King University.

The other past World Team members to advance to Friday’s finals are Victoria Anthony of the Sunkist Kids at 50 kg and Sarah Hildebrandt of the New York AC at 53 kg.

Anthony is a two-time World Team member and was on the 2017 World Team also. She defeated long-time rival Erin Golston of NYAC in her semifinals, 8-0. She will face Japan’s Miyu Nakamura, a Junior World champion, in the finals. Nakamura fell behind past U.S. Open champion Cody Pfau early by an 8-0 margin, and powered back with 19 straight points to score a 19-8 technical fall. The finals will pit a pair of Junior World champions, as Anthony won two Junior World titles earlier in her career. Anthony was a four-time WCWA national champion for Simon Fraser.

2016 World Team member Sarah Hildebrandt of NYAC powered into the finals with an 11-0 technical fall over Amy Fearnside of TMWC, 11-0. She will face Junior World champion Yu Miyahara of Japan in the finals, who edged three-time U.S. World Team member Whitney Conder of the U.S. Army, 4-2. Hildebrandt won two WCWA national titles for King.

The sixth past U.S. World Team member in the finals is Erin Clodgo of the Sunkist Kids at 72 kg. Clodgo will face American Tatum Sparks of the Argo WC, the only other entry in the weight class, in a finals set for Thursday night. This result will be included in the story about the Greco-Roman finals later tonight.

The finals at 62 kg will pit a pair of college teammates at Campbellsville University, Kayla Miracle of the Sunkist Kids and Team USA against Grace Bullen of Norway.

Miracle, a three-time WCWA national champion for Campbellsville and a two-time Junior World medalist for the United States, defeated three-time Korean Senior World Team member Jin Young Hang of Korea in the semifinals, 8-0. Bullen, in her first year at Campbellsville, scored a 10-0 technical fall over past U.S. Senior World Team member Jenna Burkert of the U.S. Army in the semifinals.

“I’m super excited. I’ve never gotten to wrestle her. We’ve been in the same bracket for Worlds and other events but never met up. I’m excited that it’s finally happening. It also gives you an idea about our depth in the room at Campbellsville. There are some tough people in the room and a couple other girls are still wrestling for medals, so it should be fun,” said Miracle.

Miracle has won three tough international matches in the last five days. On Sunday in Los Angeles in the USA vs. Japan dual, Miracle defeated 2012 Cadet World champion and 2015 Junior World silver medalist Yoshimi Kayama of Japan, 10-4. In the quarterfinals today, she beat two-time Cadet World champion Yui Sakano of Japan, 3-1.

There will be another all-USA final at 68 kg, as Julia Salata of the New York AC, who has made U.S. Junior and University World teams, will battle 2017 Junior World Team member Alexandria Glaude of the Titan Mercury WC. Salata won two WCWA titles at King, while Glaude is currently competing for McKendree Univ.

Although the 59 kg weight class is a round-robin of four athletes, two Americans went 2-0 on Thursday and will compete for the gold medal on Friday, Lauren Louive of the Hawkeye WC and Koral Sugiyama of Campbellsville.

2015 Cadet World champion Ronna Heaton of the Sunkist Kids advanced to the finals at 55 kg, where she will face Gabriela Ramos diaz Carolina of Puerto Rico. Both are U.S. college students, with Heaton at Grays Harbor College and Carolina at Wayland Baptist.
