The 20th Dave Schultz Memorial International is underway at Sports Center I at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs has kicked off with day one of the Greco-Roman competition. There will be two sessions today, at 10:00 a.m. for preliminaries and at 5:00 p.m. with semifinals. All the action is live on Flowrestling.
Loaded Korean lineup – Korea brought 16 Greco-Roman wrestlers to today’s action, led by 2012 Olympic champion and 2013 World champion Kim Hyeon-Woo at 77 kg, as well as two-time World champion and Olympian Ryu Han-Soo at 67 kg. Kim and Ryu won their quarterfinals in the morning session by technical fall. Six Korean wrestlers have advanced to Wednesday night’s semifinals, along with five who are in round robins.
Winningest Schultz wrestler now coach: The wrestler with the most career Dave Schultz Memorial titles is Army Greco-Roman star and three-time World medalist Dremiel Byers, who claimed six DSMI golds and 11 total medals at the event. Byers is very active this year at the Schultz as a coach for the U.S. Army WCAP program. Byers works with the upperweight Greco-Roman wrestlers in the Army, many who are competing here today.
Switching services: Jamel Johnson, who wrestled in college at UNC-Greensboro, entered the U.S. Army WCAP program to pursue his Olympic Greco-Roman dreams. Johnson won a World University bronze medal in 2012 and competed for the USA at the 2015 World Military Games. This year at the Schultz, Johnson has switched services and is representing the U.S. Marine Corps at 72 kg. He is reunited with his college coach Jason Loukides, who is now head coach for the USMC team. Loukides was an Army Greco-Roman wrestler himself, but moved over the U.S. Marine Corps as its coach.
Greco-Roman alumni in the house: Colorado Springs is loaded with many past U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers, some who are still active in wrestling and others who are living in town and raising their families here. There were a number of past Greco-Roman stars spotted in the house.
Corey Farkus, a many time National Team member at heavyweight competing for the U.S. Air Force, is currently the Public Works Division Operations and Maintanence Manager for Colorado Springs. Farkus is in charge of the city’s streets, including snow removal and filling potholes, a very public job in this town.
Another National Team member at heavyweight with the U.S. Army, Tim Taylor, was in the gym. Taylor, who works in construction business in the area, is a wrestling coach at nearby Sand Creek High School.
Greco-Roman Olympian Oscar Wood is retired from the Army, and owns a ranch in nearby Fountain, Colo., doing a lot of hunting and outdoors activities. Wood is starting a new business, selling deer horns for dog toys. He has already bagged an elk, two deer and two antelopes this hunting season.
Past Freestylers going Greco – In a 96 kg quarterfinal match, two past NCAA college stars who have traditionally gone freestyle met in a Greco-Roman match. Micah Burak of the Titan Mercury WC, an All-American at Penn and nationally ranked freestyler, defeated Austin Schafer, an Oklahoma State grad who is now training at Cornell. Burak won the match, 5-2, and will draw Hayden Zillmer of the Minnesota Storm in the semis. Zillmer is a member of both the Freestyle National Team and the Greco-Roman National Team.
