SALVADOR DA BAHIA, Brazil – The eight U.S. Greco-Roman representatives at the Pan American championships have weighed in and received their draws for Friday’s competition at the Pan American Judo Center.
Olympians Ben Provisor (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) and Robby Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) lead the talented U.S. squad that features five members of this year’s U.S. World Team.
Provisor, a two-time Olympian, will open his tournament at 85 kg/187 lbs. against past Chile Junior World Team member Jose Antonio Moreno Bustos. Provisor secured a spot on his first World Team by winning the U.S. World Team Trials in Las Vegas last week.
Opening with the stiffest U.S. draw is Smith, who will face defending Pan American champion Oscar Pino Hands of Cuba in the first round at 130 kg/286 lbs. Pino Hands finished with a bronze medal at the 2016 Golden Grand Prix and took top prize at the 2017 Granma Cup. Smith has made every U.S. World and Olympic team since 2013, a streak he added to last weekend in Las Vegas.
Newly determined U.S. World Team members joining Provisor and Smith in Brazil include Pat Smith (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm), Cheney Haight (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) and G’Angelo Hancock (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC).
Competing at 71 kg/156 lbs., Pat Smith will take on past Mexico World Team member Fernando Vicente Gomez. Smith and Vicente Gomez are the only two men on their side of the bracket, meaning Smith is guaranteed to win at least a bronze medal.
The same can be said for Haight, who already sits in the semifinals at 80 kg/176 lbs. against Enrique Javier Cuero Ortiz of Ecuador. Cuero Ortiz picked up a bronze medal at the Pan American Championships last year.
Hancock, a 2016 Junior World bronze medalist, will see familiar foe Kevin Mejia Castillo of Honduras in his opening match at 98 kg/215.5 lbs. The two were both in the Dave Schultz Memorial International bracket this year with Hancock winning gold and Mejia Castillo bronze. The previous year, Mejia Castillo defeated Hancock in the Dave Schultz finals.
Hayden Tuma (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) and Kamal Bey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) both finished as runners-up at last week’s U.S. World Team Trials. Tuma will begin his day against Gorge Nickford Gonzales Batis of Honduras at 66 kg/145 lbs. Bey opens against Carlos Alberto Adames Palmer of Dominican Republic at 75 kg/165 lbs.
Ryan Mango (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) awaits the winner between 2016 Olympian Andres Roberto Montano Arroya of Ecuador and 2015 Pan American Games bronze medalist Cristobal Alonso Torres Nunez of Chile at 59 kg/130 lbs.
The action from Brazil will begin at 10 a.m. local time with the finals scheduled for 5:30 p.m. local time. Salvador da Bahia, Brazil is located one hour ahead of U.S. Eastern Time.
United World Wrestling will provide a live stream of the event and complete results to those residing in the U.S. through Trackwrestling.com.
