UPDATE: Sancho, Provisor wins silver medals in Greco-Roman at Tbilisi Grand Prix in Georgia

TBILISI, Georgia – The United States finished strong on the final day of the Tbilisi Grand Prix on Sunday, capturing a pair of silver medals from Alejandro Sancho (Miami, Fla./New York AC/NMU-OTS) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and two-time Olympian Ben Provisor (Stevens Point, Wis./New York AC) at 85 kg/187.5 lbs.
Sancho was defeated in the gold-medal match by Dinar Kalenov of Kazakhstan, 2-0. Neither wrestler scored a technical point in the match. Kalenov received a point in the first period on a passivity penalty against Sancho, then received another passivity penalty point against Sancho in the second period.
Provisor battled Roberti Kobliashvili of Georgia in the finals and the result was very similar to the other U.S. finals match, losing 2-0. Kobliashvili received both of his points on passivity calls, with the first penalty point against Provisor in the first period, and the second penalty point against Provisor in the second period.
Sancho and Provisor were the only American medalists in the two-day event, which was highly competitive. Seven members of the U.S. Senior World Team competed this week, as part of preparations for the World Championships which will be held in France in August.
U.S. wrestlers who competed on Sunday included 2012 Olympian and 2017 World Team member Ellis Coleman at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., 2017 World Team member Mason Manville at 75 kg/165 lbs. and 2016 Olympian and four-time World Team member Robby Smith at 130 kg/286 lbs.
“The U.S. Greco team fought very hard at the toughest tournament we could find in Europe. We had some really good matches. We lost our gold-medal matches without giving up a single offensive point. It seemed as though we were not getting the passivity calls and the officials are not forcing the action,” said National Greco-Roman Coach Matt Lindland.
The U.S. World Greco-Roman team will next travel to Hungary for an international training camp, before returning to the United States for its final pre-World training camp at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in July.
“We still have to make some adjustments and find ways to score. We are not going to get help from the officials and we need to take it out of their hands. The team is in good spirits and there were lots of positives this weekend. We are looking forward to a great training camp with the Hungarian team,” said Lindland.
