FARGO, N.D. – Three of the four returning Junior National Greco-Roman champions have advanced to the semifinals with Friday morning quarterfinal victories at the U.S. Marines Corps Junior Greco-Roman Nationals at the Fargodome.

Moving onto the semifinals are 2016 National champion Brendan Garcia of Colorado (106), Haydn Maley of Oregon (220) and Brandon Metz of North Dakota (285).

Garcia pinned Blake Fredrickson of California in Friday’s quarterfinals in 1:06. He battles Steele Dias of Nevada in the semifinals.

Maley put on an offensive display in a 12-2 technical fall over Max Darrah of Missouri in the quarterfinals. His semifinals opponent is Aric Bohn of Wisconsins.

Also advancing to the finals is local favorite Metz, who lives in West Fargo. He pinned Zach Muller of Illinois in the quarterfinals in 1:13. Metz draws Kendrick Watson of North Carolina as his semifinal opponent.

2016 Greco-Roman National champion Tommy Brackett of Tennessee was defeated in the finals at 182 by Myles Wilson of Colorado, 8-5. Brackett must compete in the consolation rounds, and still has a chance to wrestle back for third place.

A big-time battle in the 285-pound finals looms, as Anthony Cassioppi of Illinois continues his quest for the elusive Junior Triple Crown. Cassioppi will battle 2016 Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman runner-up Montana Phillips of Oklahoma in the semifinals. If Cassioppi advances to the finals, he could have a rematch with Metz, who he defeated in the Junior freestyle finals, 4-1.

There were four Junior Greco-Roman runners-up entering the quarterfinals, but only two advanced, Austin Macias of Illinois (126) and Dalton Young of Washington (132). Macias will face Ryan Roth of Colorado in the semifinals, while Young has drawn Riley Gurr of Montana in his semifinal. Young was a 2017 UWW Junior Nationals champion.

2016 Junior Nationals runners-up who were knocked out in the quarters were Brenden Chaoanapibool of Washington (106), and Max Wohlabaugh of Florida (170). Chaoanapibool was beaten by Justin Cardiani of Illinois in an 11-0 technical fall. Wohlabaugh withdrew with an injury default and did not compete in the quarterfinals against Trent Hidlay of Pennsylvania.

All of the 2017 Junior National freestyle champions who entered the quarterfinals won their matches and will compete in the semifinals, Cassioppi, plus Samuel Latona of Alabama (106), Patrick McKee of Minnesota (120), Anthony Artalona of Florida (152) and Jacob Warner of Illinois (195).

Illinois continues its Fargo domination in the men’s divisions, moving 12 wrestlers into the semifinals, well ahead of Wisconsin and Colorado with five in the semifinals. Seven other Illinois wrestlers are still alive in the consolation rounds.

The schedule for the Junior Nationals Greco-Roman tournament has been changed, with the semifinals set for Friday night at 7:00 p.m. The Saturday championship finals round has been moved earlier in the day, kicking off at 10:00 a.m.. All of the action will be covered live by Flowrestling.
