Returning freestyle champions Artalona, Allar unbeaten after day one of Junior Freestyle Nationals

FARGO, N.D. – All of the top contenders in the field at the USMC Junior Freestyle Nationals advanced unbeaten on the first day of action at the FargoDome on Sunday.
Returning Junior National freestyle champions Anthony Artalona of Florida (145) and Jake Allar of Minnesota (160) won all of their early matches by technical fall.
Artalona dominated Mason Wallace of Kansas, 10-0, Tyler Garcia of Oklahoma, 12-1, Nick Lombard of New Jersey, 10-0 on day one. Allar scored identical 10-0 technical falls over Elijah Davis of California and Isaiah Bailey of New Jersey.
There are three 2016 Junior Greco-Roman champions who remain unbeaten in freestyle on the first day, Brendon Garcia of Colorado (106), Haydn Maley of Oregon (195) and Brandon Metz of North Dakota (285).
Garcia had one match, beating Joshua Miller of Ohio, 4-0. Maley had a pair of shutout wins, stopping Devin Wehr of Indiana, 4-0 and Mateo Pena of Oklahoma, 6-0. Metz scored a pair of 10-0 technical falls over Alexander Aarsvold of Minnesota and Joseph Markham of Michigan.
Garcia was also a Junior Nationals runner-up last year in freestyle. He was one of six 2016 Junior Freestyle runners-up who went unbeaten today, joined by Dylan D’Emilio of Ohio (120), Rayvon Foley of Michigan (120), Paul Konrath of Indiana (126), Max Wohlabaugh of Florida (170) and Anthony Cassioppi of Illinois (286)
Five 2016 Cadet National freestyle champions who are moving up to Junior this year are also unbeaten, Corey Gamet of Michigan (106), Brock Hardy of Utah (145), Jared Franek of North Dakota (152), Aaron Brooks of Maryland (170) and Mason Phillips of Oklahoma (285). One of the 2016 Cadet National Greco-Roman champions are also without a loss in freestyle, Will Lewan of Illinois (145)
D’Emilio won a 2015 Cadet National title. He was joined by three other 2015 Cadet National champions with an unblemished record, Sammy Sasso of Pennsylvania (145), Joe Lee of Indiana (160) and Jacob Warner of Illinois (195).
There were no USA Wrestling Junior Triple Crown winners last year. There are eight 2017 Junior Folkstyle National champions who were undefeated today, keeping alive their hopes for a Triple Crown, including Konrath and Cassioppi, plus Daniel Kimball of Iowa (100), Cody Phippen of Missouri (113), Jake Gliva of Minnesota (126), Parker Filius of Montana (138), Zachary Barnes of Iowa (145) and Max Lyon of Iowa (182).
