BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – The U.S. pulled in a perfect 10-for-10 Greco-Roman medal haul on Friday evening at the Cadet Pan American Championships with Tommy Curran, Carson Manville, Peyton Robb and Jace Punke all taking top prize.
The Minnesota tandem of Manville and Robb were untouchable as they both cleanly navigated through the competition with dominant showings.
Manville cruised to the 58 kg/127 lbs. title with two technical falls and one pin, including an 8-0 victory over Lenin Gonzalez Palacio of Ecuador in the gold medal match.
“I just stuck to what I do best…It was a pretty good day,” Manville said. “It just helps. This is just a stepping stone to becoming a Fargo national champ. It’s exactly the same. Go out there, do you best, listen to your coach and do what you’ve been taught.”
Robb scored three technical falls on his run to the 69 kg/152 lbs. title. He put up scores of 8-0 and 11-0 over international foes before stopping Hector Rodriguez Benitez of Venezuela in the finals, 8-0.
“I had three matches that ended before the end of the first period, so overall I had a good day. I think I was just going out there attacking, ready to control my ties, do my moves and not let that other guy control the pace,” Robb said.
Curran bounced back from an early defeat in round-robin play to emerge as the 42 kg/92 lbs. champion with a 3-1 overall record for the tournament. His signature win came in the third round over eventual silver medalist Eduardo Lovera of Argentina, 10-7.
Punke earned the 100 kg/220 lbs. crown with a 5-1 decision over Mexico’s Edson Acuna Salazar. Punke and Salazar were the only two entrants in the 100 kg field.
Silver medals were earned by Parker Decker at 46 kg/101 lbs., Hunter Lewis at 50 kg/110 lbs., Michael O’Malley at 76 kg/167 lbs. and Hunter DeJong at 85 kg/187 lbs. All four men were entered in round-robin brackets, and all ran the table save one crucial loss.
Picking up bronze medals were King Sandoval at 54 kg/119 lbs. and Kevon Davenport at 63 kg/138 lbs. Sandoval posted a 2-2 record in a five-man round robin to finish in third place. Davenport dropped a 7-6 decision to eventual champion Diego Martinez De Leija of Mexico before blanking Guatemala’s Jose Varela Garcia 10-0 in his bronze medal match.
With 10 medalists, the U.S. cruised to the team championship with 92 points. Mexico finished in second place with 76 points, followed by Argentina in third place with 57 points.
All 10 of today’s competitors will compete on Sunday in the men’s freestyle competition to close out the weekend’s festivities.
The Cadet Pan American Championships will resume tomorrow at 12 p.m. (ET) with the women’s freestyle competition. Nine U.S. women weighed in and received their draws for Saturday’s action. The American draws can be viewed below.
