Stieber, Snyder ranked No. 1 by UWW, with nine U.S. freestylers in the January 2017 rankings

2016 World champion Logan Stieber (Columbus, Ohio (Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC) joined 2016 Olympic champion Kyle Snyder (Woodbine, Md./Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC) with No. 1 World rankings in men’s freestyle, as released by United World Wrestling today.
Stieber powered through a loaded 61 kg/134 lbs. weight class to win a gold medal at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary on December 10. He was competing in his first Senior-level World Championships, after winning a silver medal at the Junior Worlds back in 2011. Stieber is one of just four four-time NCAA Div. I champions when he ran the table at Ohio State.
Snyder, who added a 2016 Rio Olympics gold medal at 97 kg/213 lbs. to his 2015 World gold medal, is currently competing at heavyweight as a junior at Ohio State, seeking a second career NCAA title. Snyder has competed once in freestyle since the Olympic Games, wrestling for Titan Mercury WC at the Freestyle World Clubs Cup in Kharkiv, Ukraine, where he went 2-2 in his matches.
The United States had nine wrestlers ranked in men’s freestyle in January, with seven holding top 10 rankings.
J’den Cox (Columbia, Mo./Titan Mercury WC/MWF), a 2016 Olympic bronze medalist, remains at No. 4 in the rankings at 96 kg/213 lbs. Cox is currently competing in his senior year at Missouri, seeking a third career NCAA title. He has not wrestled in freestyle since the Rio Olympic Games.
Two U.S. wrestlers remain at No. 6 at their weight classes, Frank Molinaro (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) at 65 kg/143 lbs. and Tervel Dlagnev (Columbus, Ohio (Sunkist Kids/Ohio RTC) at 125 kg/275 lbs. Both were fifth at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, and neither has competed since Rio.
Also remaining at No. 7 at 74 kg/163 lbs. is 2016 Olympian Jordan Burroughs (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids/Nebraska RTC). A 2012 Olympic champion and three-time World champion, Burroughs placed ninth at the Rio Olympics and has not competed since then.
Coming in No. 8 at 70 kg/154 lbs. is James Green (Lincoln, Neb./Titan Mercury WC/Nebraska RTC), who placed seventh at his weight class at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary on December 10. Green was a World bronze medalist at this division in 2015.
Two new U.S. athletes appear in the UWW rankings, B.J. Futrell (Philadelphia, Pa./Titan Mercury WC/Pennsylvania RTC), who is No. 16 at 65 kg/143 lbs., and Alan Waters (Columbia, Mo./Missouri Wrestling Foundation), who is now No. 18 at 61 kg/134 lbs.
Futrell won a gold medal at the Bill Farrell International in New York City in November, and wrestled for Titan Mercury WC at the Freestyle World Clubs Cup in Kharkiv, Ukraine later in November, going 2-2 in his matches.
Waters won a pair of international bronze medals this fall, at the Intercontinental Cup in Russia in October and the UWW Golden Grand Prix Finals in Azerbaijan in November. He also tried out for the USA World Team at 61 kg/134 lbs. in New York City in November, but did not medal at the event.
