Geordan Speiller, shown at the 2016 University Nationals, won a gold medal in Cuba on Sunday.

HAVANA, Cuba – 2016 U.S. Open champion Geordan Speiller (Oviedo, Fla./Florida Jets) won a gold medal in Greco-Roman at 80 kg/176 lbs. at the Cerro Pelado Tournament on Sunday.

Speiller scored a 7-7 criteria decision over Duran of Cuba in the gold-medal match. It was the only match that Speiller had during the tournament.

It was his second Granma Cup medal of his career, to go along with a bronze medal in 2015.

Speiller was second in the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, losing in the championship series to Olympian and two-time World medalist Andy Bisek of the Minnesota Storm in the finals. He started this year off with a victory at the 2017 Dave Schultz Memorial International in January.

The USA will have a full delegation of men’s freestyle wrestlers competing in Cuba later this week, representing the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club. Competition in men’s freestyle will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 22-23.
