KLIPPAN, Sweden – There will be no U.S. gold-medal finalists in this year’s Senior division at the Klippan Lady Open, considered one of the most competitive women’s freestyle Open tournaments in the world each year.
Two U.S. wrestlers dropped matches in the semifinals and will compete in Saturday’s bronze medal matches, Arian Carpio (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Mallory Velte (Sacramento, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.
Carpio, who attends Arizona State, was defeated in the semifinals by Yuliia Prontsevich of Russia by technical fall, 12-1. Her bronze medal pairing is already determined for Sunday, when she faces Atena Kodama of Japan.
Carpio opened the tournament with a 10-0 technical fall over GunnRita Boine of Norway, the 2014 Cadet World silver medalist.
Velte had a very competitive semifinals battle with 2015 World silver medalist Petra Olli of Finland, 8-4. Olli scored a takedown and gut wrench for an early 4-0 lead, but Velte battled back for two first-period takedowns to tie the bout at 4-4 at the break. In the second period, Olli hit another takedown then gut wrench combination for four more points and held off Velte’s offense for the victory.
In the bronze-medal match, Velte will face the winner of the Sunday morning repechage bout between Maryia Mamshuk of Belarus and Miyn Imai of Japan.
Velte won her first two matches with 10-0 technical falls, defeating Eliana Szabo of Hungary and 2016 Junior World bronze medalist Maya Nelson of the United States.
"I wrestled OK. However, a hole in my wrestling has been closing out a close match. Hopefully, tomorrow I can change that with a bronze," said Velte.
Velte is a Women’s National Team member in two weight classes, after placing second in the 2016 World Team Trials at 60 kg/132 lbs. and third at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. Last week, she won her second straight WCWA Women’s College Nationals title, competing for Simon Fraser University.
The Klippan Lady Open has a different format than most international tournaments, contesting each weight class over two days. Most current international events have a one-day format.
Three U.S. women have been pulled back into the repechage rounds, after losing to an eventual finalist. Still alive in a hunt for a bronze medal are three-time World Team member Whitney Conder (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) at 53 kg/116.5 lbs., 2014 University World silver medalist Amy Fearnside (Jamestown, N.D/Titan Mercury WC) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. and 2016 Junior World bronze medalist Alexis Porter (Ballston Lake, N.Y./NYAC/Bearcat WC) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.
Conder, Fearnside and Porter must win their Sunday morning repechage bouts to qualify for a bronze-medal match.
Russia leads the field with four finalists, while Japan, Belarus and Canada each have two finalists. 2016 Olympic champion Erica Wiebe of Canada will face fellow Canadian Justina DiStasio in the finals at 75 kg/165 lbs. Past World champion and 2016 Olympic medalist Jenny Fransson of Sweden reached the finals at 69 kg/152 lbs.
