LAS VEGAS – 12 women picked up Western Junior Regional championships on Thursday evening at the U.S. Open Wrestling Championships held at the South Point Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.
Stealing the show was 127-pound champion Kaden Campbell of Colorado who won all three of her matches in dominant fashion. She defeated Canada’s Stephanie Mould by fall in the first round and followed with a pair of 12-0 technical falls over California’s Alexa Downs and Canada’s defending champion Victoria Seal to take the title.
“I did a lot better than I thought I was going to,” Campbell noted following her performance. “I didn’t have a single girl score on me, which I think is pretty much an accomplishment in itself. A lot of it is listening to my coaches on and off the mat, and listening to the things they have to teach.”
Campbell has excelled in 2017 coming off an injury riddled 2016 season that kept her from competing. She also won the 127-pound crown at the USA Wrestling Junior Folkstyle Nationals held in Oklahoma City, Okla. last month.
Of the five defending champions entered in the event, three were able to earn a repeat bid.
Winning for the second straight year was Erin Geddie of Canada, who won a best-of-three series at 180 pounds over Mahealani Ramirez of Hawaii, with a pin and a technical fall. Geddie was a 2016 Cadet Pan American champion.
Canada sensation Jacqueline Lew won her second-straight Western Junior Regional title after going 4-0 in a five-athlete round-robin at 117 pounds. Her highlight win came in the first round over 2017 USA Wrestling Junior Folkstyle Nationals champion Autumn Gordon of Ohio. Lew is a two-time Cadet Pan American medalist, and competed in the 2015 Cadet World Championships.
Colorado’s Clare Garcia defeated Nevada’s Aminda Mali Groette Kolstad two matches to none in a best-of-three series at 122 pounds by scores of 10-0 and 14-4 to win her second-consecutive championship at this event.
2015 USA Wrestling Cadet Nationals champion Jerzie Estrada of Colorado cruised to the 144-pound title with a 12-4 win over Destiny Lyng of California in the finals.
Two-time Fargo All-American Kaylee Moore of Washington added a 132-pound Western Junior Regional title to her resume after defeating Morgan Norris of Nevada, 14-5, in the finals. Moore was coming off an impressive third-place finish at the USA Wrestling Cadet Folkstyle Nationals.
“I felt pretty successful. I felt like I wrestled really well…I feel like it brought my confidence up. It made me realize that I’m good enough to be out here with everybody else and be able to compete,” Moore said.
Also claiming top prize at Western Junior Regional were Angel Rios of Colorado at 100 pounds, Makayla Rydbeck of California at 106 pounds, Peyton Prussin of Nevada at 112 pounds, Tristan Kelly of Colorado at 152 pounds, Anatli Smalley of California at 164 pounds and Marlene Andreassen of TIT/Norway at 220 pounds.
