The Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association (WCWA), the governing body for women’s college wrestling, has released its Preseason individual and team rankings.
In this ranking, the WCWA released two team rankings, one based upon returning tournament strength and a second based upon dual meet strength. Two different teams were able to claim No. 1 rankings.
In the Preseason Tournament rankings, three-time defending WCWA champion King University came in at No. 1 with 107 points. Coming in at No. 2 based on tournament strength is Simon Fraser University, which placed third at the 2016 WCWA Nationals. Rounding out the top five based on tournament scoring are No. 3 Campbellsville, No. 4 McKendree and No. 5 Oklahoma City.
The dual meet preseason rankings put Simon Fraser at No. 1, followed by King at No. 2, Oklahoma City at No. 3, Campbellsville at No. 4 and a tie between the University of the Cumberlands and Lindenwood University at No. 5.
Returning WCWA champions who earned individual No. 1 rankings are Marina Doi of King (101), Becka Leathers of Oklahoma City (123), Natalia Hinojo of Oklahoma City (130), Kayla Miracle of Campbellsville (136), Mallory Velte of Simon Fraser (143) and Tiara Scott of Campbellsville (191). Miracle and Scott are two-time WCWA national champions.
A pair of past WCWA champions who took an Olympic redshirt year have returned this year and reclaimed the No. 1 ranking in their weight class, 2016 Olympic Haley Augello of King at 109 pounds and 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials champion Tamyra Mensah of Wayland Baptist at 155 pounds. Augello won WCWA national titles in 2014 and 2015. Mensah was a 2014 WCWA national champion.
Augello placed ninth in the Olympic Games at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. Mensah won the Olympic Trials at 69 kg/152 lbs. but did not compete in the Rio Games because the United States did not qualify for the Olympics at her weight class. Both trained at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs while on their redshirt year.
2016 WCWA runners-up who scored No. 1 rankings in the preseason were Abby Lloyd of Simon Fraser (116) and Hanna Hall of Campbellsville (170).
Seniors with No. 1 rankings are Augello, Hinojo, Mensah, Hall and Scott. Juniors with top rankings are Doi, Lloyd, Miracle and Velte. Leathers is a sophomore.
2016 WCWA national champion Forrest Molinari of King holds the No. 2 ranking at 155 behind Mensah. They competed at the same weight class at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
There are 31 teams in the WCWA rankings, the most in history, including newcomers Eastern Oregon (OR), Grays Harbor (WA), MacMurray (IL), Brewton Parker (GA), Bacone (OK) and Wentworth Military Academy (MO).
The 2017 WCWA Women’s College Nationals are set for Oklahoma City University, Feb. 10-11.
