The Fresno Bee newspaper has reported that Oregon State Associate Head Coach Troy Steiner has been hired as head coach of the Fresno State program, which is being reinstated.

FRESNO BEE STORY: Fresno State hires Oregon State assistant, ex-Iowa star Troy Steiner as wrestling coach

Fresno State has named Oregon State assistant Troy Steiner as the coach of the Bulldogs’ reinstated wrestling program.

The hiring was confirmed Tuesday by the university, which is poised to restore the sport after it was dropped in 2006 because of budgetary and Title IX pressures. The Bulldogs are scheduled to return to competition during the 2017-18 school year.

Steiner has been at Oregon State since April 2006, moving from Iowa when then-Hawkeyes coach Jim Zalesky was hired by the Beavers. He was promoted to associate head coach entering the 2012-13 season, according to his Oregon State biography, and also coached at Wisconsin and Minnesota after an All-America career at Iowa – where he won three Big Ten titles while compiling a 148-13 record at 134 and 142 pounds.

Steiner has been very active with USA Wrestling throughout his life, first as a youth and college athlete, then as a top international freestyle athlete, then as a coach.

His twin brother Terry Steiner is USA Wrestling’s National Women’s Coach, and Troy has been an active volunteer coach in the women’s program, including serving as a U.S. World Team Coach. He has also coached numerous men athletes from Oregon State and the region in freestyle wrestling through the Northwest Wrestling Regional Training Center.

He has spent a decade on the Oregon State coaching staff. Previous college assistant coaching positions included at Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Fresno State has not yet issued a press release on this hiring. An attempt to speak with Troy Steiner has been made, and the story will be updated if more information becomes available.
