FRISCO, Texas – Four U.S. women’s freestyle wrestlers have a chance to win gold medals after going unbeaten in the first session at the Pan American Championships, which started today at the Dr. Pepper Arena.

Winning semifinal bouts to advance to the gold-medal round were 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Clarissa Chun, Columbia, Mo. (Sunkist Kids) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., 2012 Olympian Kelsey Campbell (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) at 58 kg/128 lbs. and 2016 U.S. Open champion Amanda Hendey, San Gabriel, Calif. (Titan Mercury WC) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.

Going 2-0 in her four-athlete roundrobin at 69 kg/152 lbs. was 2012 World champion and three-time World medalist Elena Pirozhkova (Colorado Springs, Colo./Titan Mercury WC).

The gold-medal and bronze-medal finals are schedule for 6:00 p.m. Central Time and will be broadcast on Flowrestling.

Chun won three times to advance to the finals, where she will meet Natasha Kramble of Canada for the gold medal. She opened with technical falls over Suzana Paula De Alameida Dos Santos of Brazil, 10-0 and Yusneylys Guzman Lopez of Cuba, 12-0. She scored at key times to earn a 7-4 win over Laura Gabriela Paredo Torres of Mexico, 7-4 in the semfinals.

Chun was a 2008 World champion and was also fifth at the 2008 Olympic Games, to go with her 2012 Olympic bronze medal.

“I feel pretty good. This is good practice for me, to get the nerves out there. The Pan Am Championships is a fun event for me,

Campbell opened with a 10-0 technical fall over Emily Yulieth Sanchez Ortega of Panama, then edged Lissette Alexandra Antes Castillo of Ecuador, 2-1 in the semifinals. She will battle Yaquelin Estornell Elizastigue of Cuba in the finals.

“I wrestled (Antes) a couple of times. The thing about these Pan American countries is that they are athletes, and they are motivated a little differently than we are in the U.S. This is a very big tournament for them. It’s big for us too, but I think sometimes we can take this for granted. For them, it’s a big deal. Knowing that coming in, I have to dig for that motivation, that passion, that maybe wouldn’t be there otherwise,” said Campbell.

Hendey scored pins in both of her matches, to advance to the finals against Lais Nunez de Olivera of Brazil. Hendey first put away Leidy Marcela Izquierdo Mendez of Colombia in 4:03 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, while trailing 3-8 to Katerina Videaux Lopez of Cuba, she turned and pinned Videaux in 4:16.

“We wrestled (Videaux) at Pan Ams last year, and I wasn’t ready for her judo throws. I was reaching, and she was kind of throwing me all over the place. This time I knew what to expect. I was almost to patient, not reaching to give her those throws. I gave up a couple of takedowns, no big moves, no throws. I never felt like I was out of it,” said Hendey.

Pirozhkova pinned Cinthia Morales of Mexico at the 3:00 mark in her first match, then defeated Cuba’s Yudari Sanchez Rodriguez of Cuba, 5-8 in the morning session. In her final round-robin match this evening, she will face Maria Jose Acosta Acosta of Venezuela.

Already earning a bronze medal at 55 kg/121 lbs. was 2015 U.S. Open champion Sharon Jacobson, Colorado Springs, Colo. (U.S. Army WCAP). She lost her semifinal match to Guilia Rodrigues Penalber de Olivera of Brazil by pin in 2:07. Jacobson was in the top of the bracket, which had just two athletes, and therefor automatically gets the bronze medal without another match.

Earning spots in the gold-medal round were 2016 U.S. Open champion Michaela Hutchison, Lebanon, Ill. (Titan Mercury WC) at 53 kg/116.5 lbs. and Iris Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) at 75 kg/165 lbs.

Hutchison lost her opener to 2016 Canadian Olympian Jasmine Mian, 0-6. When Mian reached the finals, Hutchison was pulled back into repechage, where she pinned Vicmarie Requena Tirado of Puerto Rico in 30 seconds. She will battle Leidy Caterine Cifuentes Carranza of Colombia for the bronze-medal.

Smith won her first match, a pin in 5:18 over Dayanara Rivera Suarez of Puerto Rico in 5:18. In the semifinals, wh injured her leg and lost by injury default to Andrea Carolina Olaya Gutierrez of Colombia in 1:36. She is eligible for a bronze-medal match against Jaramit Leonor Weffer Guanipa of Venezuela, but her injury could prevent her from competing this evening.

At 60 kg/132 lbs.2015 World bronze medalist Leigh Jaynes-Provisor (Colorado Springs, Colo. /U.S. Army WCAP) has an 0-2 record in her four-athlete roundrobin. She lost her first round-robin match to two-time Olympic bronze medalist Jackeline Renteria Castillo of Colombia by pin in 5:58. Jaynes-Provisor tied the match at 3-3 in closing 10 seconds, but a Renteria reversal led to a pin as time was running out. She lost to Yanet Ursula Sovero Nino of Peru, 3-8 in the second match. Tonight, she faces 2015 Pan American Games champion Joice Souza Da Silva of Brazil in the final bout.

“It is different for each person. I felt that in some cases we let ourselves open up and got some things going. Those were the matches we came out on top of. We gave ourselves a chance and let ourselves open up. In some of the matches we lost, we were just tentative. You can’t come into a major competition like this and be tentative. You have to go out and attack,” said National Women’s Coach Terry Steiner.

The United States and Canada have the most gold-medal finalists with four each.
