A group of college wrestlers from the Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site, along with a few top UWW Cadet-age wrestlers from the USA, will compete in Greco-Roman at the Malar Cup in Vasteras, Sweden, October 31-November 1.
Members from the NMU-OTS team, along with one athlete from the U.S. Olympic Training Center, will compete in the Senior/U 23 division at the tournament. Included in the group are two athletes from the 2015 UWW Junior World Team, Dalton Roberts (Fowlerville, Mich./NMU-OTS) and G’Angelo Hancock (Colorado Springs, Colo./USOTC).
The team includes a mix of upperclassmen and new freshman on the NMU-OTS team, One of the freshman is 2014 Junior Triple Crown winner Randon Miranda (Palmdale, Calif./NMU-OTS). One of the veterans on the team is nationally ranked heavyweight Parker Betts (St. Michael, Minn./NMU-OTS).
We have 18 athletes on the tour training and competing. We are training three times a day. Sessions are divided between Cadets and Juniors. The athletes are getting a variety of partners and techniques from multiple coaches. The facility and accommodations are very comfortable. Thursday, a dual has been arranged between Team USA and the Sweden Klippan Club,” said team coach Lucas Steldt.
The UWW Cadets on the tour includes 2015 UWW Junior Nationals runner-up Jordan Martinez of Colorado Springs, Colo., who also was second at the 2015 Junior Nationals in Fargo, N.D. Cohlton Schultz of Highlands Ranch, Colo., a 2015 Cadet Nationals champion and Alston Nutter of Fenimore, Wis., a Cadet Nationals runner-up last year, are also on the roster.
While high school athletes across the U.S. are gearing up for folkstyle season, our top Greco prospects are training with the top Junior and Cadet athletes in the world. It’s great to see that young talented athletes have bigger goals than winning state title and getting looked at by a college. These young men decided their goals are international. These men dream of winning Olympic Gold and are making the sacrifice to train and compete overseas,” said National Greco-Roman Coach Matt Lindland.
