Terrell wins two bouts in freestyle at CISM World Games in Korea

MUNGYEONG, Korea – Sergeant Victor Terrell (U.S. Army) went 2-2 at 86 kg/189 lbs., the top U.S. performance on the second day of freestyle wrestling at the 6th Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) World Games, at the Mungyeong Indoor Gymnasium on Wednesday.
Terrell opened up with a pair of strong victories, defeating Mohamed Mohamed of Egypt, 8-2 and Karamjeet Nain of India, 9-4. In the quarterfinals, he was defeated by 2012 Junior World champion Mohammadjavad Ebrahimizvlaei of Iran, 1-6.
When Ebrahimizvlaei reached the finals, Terrell was pulled back into repechage, where he fell to Aliaksandr Hushtyn of Belarus, by technical fall, 1-11. Hushtyn was seventh in the 2015 European Games.
Two other U.S. wrestlers were defeated in their opening matches and did not qualify for repechage when their opponents failed to reach the finals, Captain William Simpson of the U.S. Army at 61 kg/134 lbs. and Private First Class Michael Hooker of the U.S. Army at 71 kg/156 lbs.
Both of these opponents were silver medalists at the 2014 World Military Championships held at Fort Dix, N.J. Simpson fell 0-10 to Yeldos Abikenov of Kazakhstan. Hooker lost a 8-12 shootout to Tim Meuller of Germany.
The freestyle competition has concluded, and the USA did not win a medal.
Russia dominated the men’s freestyle action on Wednesday, winning all four gold medals for the day. Champions included 2012 Olympic champion Dzhamel Otarsultanov at 61 kg/134 lbs., 2014 World champion and 2015 World bronze medalist Soslan Ramonov at 71 kg/156 lbs., 2013 World University Games bronze medalist Shamil Kudiiamagomedov at 86 kg/189 lbs. and 2011 European silver medalist Vladislav Baitcaev at 125 kg/275 lbs. Over the two days, Russia won seven of the eight gold medals.
There is an off day for competition on Thursday, which will include the first day of weigh-ins for Greco-Roman.
