VonOhlen wins opening bout, as four U.S. freestylers compete at CISM World Games in Korea

MUNGYEONG, Korea – Four U.S. wrestlers competed on the first day of freestyle wrestling at the 6th Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) World Games, at the Mungyeong Indoor Gymnasium on Tuesday.
Winning his opening match and finishing with a 1-2 record at 65 kg/143 lbs. was First Lieutenant Cole VonOhlen of the U.S. Air Force.
VonOhlen opened with a 10-0 technical fall in the first period over Ile Georgiev of Macedonia. In his second match, he lost to 2013 World bronze medalist Magomed Kurbanaliev (Russia), in a 0-10 technical fall. When Kurbanaliev reached the finals, VonOhlen was drawn back into repechage, where he fell to 2015 World bronze medalist Vasyl Shuptar of Ukraine, by technical fall, 2-10.
Competing in two matches was Sergeant Vladislav Dombrovskiy of the U.S. Army at 74 kg/163 lbs. He dropped a 4-4 criteria decision in his opening match to Georg Harth of Germany, who was fifth in the 2010 European Championships. When Harth reached the finals, Dombrovskiy qualified for repechage, where he lost to 2010 Asian Games bronze medalist Lee Yun-Seok of Korea, 3-8.
Dropping their first match and not qualifying for repechage were Sergeant Max Nowry of the U.S. Army at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. and Corporal Endyr Meza of the U.S. Army at 97 kg/213 lbs.
Three U.S. wrestlers weighed in and received their opening round draws in men’s freestyle for Wednesday: Captain William Simpson of the U.S. Army at 61 kg/134 lbs., Private First Class Michael Hooker of the U.S. Army at 71 kg/156 lbs. and Sergeant Victor Terrell of U.S. Army at 86 kg/189 lbs.
Russia won three of the first four men’s freestyle medals, with golds from Olympic champion and five-time World champion Khadjimurad Gatsalov at 97 kg/213 lbs., 2014 World champion Khetik Tsabolov at 74 kg/163 lbs. and 2013 World bronze medalist Magomed Kurbanaliev at 65 kg/143 lbs. The other gold medal went to host Korea, with 2012 Olympian Kim Jin-Cheol winning at 57 kg/125.5 lbs.
