NEW YORK – It will be a rivalry renewed in the 65 kg/143 lbs. gold medal match at the 2015 Bill Farrell International as Jordan Oliver (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) will do battle against Logan Stieber (Columbus, Ohio/Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC) once more.
The two last met in the 65 kg challenge tournament finals at the 2015 U.S. World Team Trials with Oliver taking the match 8-5.
Oliver and Stieber are also remembered for having one of the most controversial endings to a NCAA finals match in history. Stieber won that match 4-3 to give the Buckeye great his first of four NCAA titles.
Stieber has recorded three technical falls en route to the finals, outscoring his opponents by a combined 32-0 margin. Conversely, Oliver owns three tight wins on the day including a 4-4 criteria win over Frank Molinaro in the semifinals.
The finals are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. (EST) at the New York Athletic Club in New York City, N.Y.
Only the six Olympic weight classes in men’s freestyle are being contested at the Bill Farrell International.
Dan Vallimont (Long Beach, N.Y./New York AC) upended 2014 U.S. World Team member Nick Marable (Morgantown, W.Va./Sunkist Kids) 8-2 in the 74 kg/163 lbs. semifinals. He will look to continue his hot streak against 2014 World bronze medalist Bekzod Abdurakhmonov of Uzbekistan in the finals.
Ed Ruth (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) will do battle against Jon Reader (Brookings, S.D./Sunkist Kids) in the 86 kg/189 lbs. finals. It will be the first time the two have met since their wild 24-18 match, won by Ruth, at the 2015 U.S. World Team Trials.
Two-Time NCAA champion Nick Gwiazdowski (Delanson, N.Y./Wolfpack WC) will look to exact revenge on 2009 Junior World champion Dom Bradley in the 125 kg/275 lbs. finals. Bradley defeated Gwiazdowski 2-1 in the true third match at the U.S. World Team Trials in June.
Also facing each other since for the first time since the U.S. World Team Trials true third match are two-time U.S. World Team member J.D. Bergman (Columbus, Ohio/New York AC/Ohio RTC) and 2014 University World silver medalist Dustin Kilgore (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 97 kg/213 lbs. Bergman pinned Kilgore in 30 seconds during said match.
Zach Sanders (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) will take on a red-hot Tyler Graff (Dublin, Ohio/New York AC) in the 57 kg/125.5 lbs. gold medal match. Graff has won by technical fall in three of his four contested bouts today.
The finals can be viewed live on Flowrestling.org this evening.
