Bleau named OW as World Team set at Body Bar UWW Cadet Nationals in Texas

IRVING, Texas – In the largest field in event history, champions were crowned and the U.S. World Team set at the Body Bar UWW Cadet Nationals on Saturday.
Winning the Outstanding Wrestler was Alexis Bleau of Journeymen WC of New York who defeated Zoey Thompson of Maui Sports Foundation with two straight pins in the championship series at 70 kg. Bleau scored pins of 1:07 and 1:53. She was a 2014 Cadet Nationals champion and Junior Nationals runner-up and also won a 2015 USA Wrestling Folkstyle National title.
It was a tough day for returning Cadet World Team members, as three athletes who wrestled in the World Championships last year were unable to defend their titles.
At 46 kg, in a battle of California wrestlers, Alleida Martinez needed all three matches to defeat 2014 Cadet World Team member Sariyah Jones. Martinez won the first match 6-0, but Jones bounced back to win the second 2-1. In the deciding third match, Martinez won 3-0.
Two other returning Cadet World Team members, Hailey Cox of Utah at 52 kg and Gabrielle Garcia of California at 56 kg, failed to reach the finals, and wrestled back to finish third.
2014 Body Bar UWW Cadet Nationals runner-up Ronna Heaton of South Dakota made the World Team at 49 kg, needing three matches to defeat Aleeah Gould of California. Heaton won the first match, and Gould rebounded to win bout two. In the deciding third match, Heaton beat Gould, 2-1.
Another series went the full three matches at 52 kg, as California’s Gracie Figueroa lost the first match, then swept the final two bouts to defeat Kaden Campbell of Colorado. Campbell dominated match one, 12-4, but rebounded with 7-4 and 6-4 wins. Figueroa was second in both the Junior and Cadet divisions at the 2015 USAW Folkstyle Nationals.
With a dominant performance at 60 kg, 2014 Cadet Nationals champion Ashlynn Ortega of Colorado won the finals in two straight over Hanna Ramos of Wisconsin, with 13-3 and 11-0 technical falls.
2015 USA Wrestling Folkstyle National champion McKayla Campbell of Ohio was also dominant in the finals, scoring a pair of technical falls over 2104 Cadet Nationals champion Naomi Chavez of Texas, 10-0 and 11-0.
Another 2015 USA Wrestling Folkstyle National champion Alexandria Liles of Texas won the 56 kg title, beating Colorado’s Jerzie Estrada in two straight, 6-5 and by pin in 3:25.
2014 Cadet Nationals runner-up Kayla Marano of Oklahoma needed just two bouts to defeat Emily Cue of Colorado in the 65 kg finals.
Two athletes won World Team spots uncontested, Jessica Rudick of Pennsylvania at 38 kg and Vayle Baker of Downtown Mat Club at 40 kg
Three other gold medals were awarded. At 78 kg, Kenya Spenser of Michigan, a past Cadet Nationals champion who was fourth at the 2014 Junior Nationals, defeated Andrea Sennett of Illinois in the finals, 7-4.
Winning five-athlete round robins with undefeated records were Alexis Boruel of Tokay WC at 84 kg and Kimberly Jackson of North Dallas High School at 100 kg.
Medals were also awarded at the Schoolgirl, Kids Div. II and Kids Div. I age levels.
The Body Bar Women’s Nationals concludes on Sunday with the UWW Junior division, with World Team spots up for grabs.

IRVING, Texas – In the largest field in event history, champions were crowned and the U.S. World Team set at the Body Bar UWW Cadet Nationals on Saturday.
Winning the Outstanding Wrestler was Alexis Bleau of Journeymen WC of New York who defeated Zoey Thompson of Maui Sports Foundation with two straight pins in the championship series at 70 kg. Bleau scored pins of 1:07 and 1:53. She was a 2014 Cadet Nationals champion and Junior Nationals runner-up and also won a 2015 USA Wrestling Folkstyle National title.
It was a tough day for returning Cadet World Team members, as three athletes who wrestled in the World Championships last year were unable to defend their titles.
At 46 kg, in a battle of California wrestlers, Alleida Martinez needed all three matches to defeat 2014 Cadet World Team member Sariyah Jones. Martinez won the first match 6-0, but Jones bounced back to win the second 2-1. In the deciding third match, Martinez won 3-0.
Two other returning Cadet World Team members, Hailey Cox of Utah at 52 kg and Gabrielle Garcia of California at 56 kg, failed to reach the finals, and wrestled back to finish third.
2014 Body Bar UWW Cadet Nationals runner-up Ronna Heaton of South Dakota made the World Team at 49 kg, needing three matches to defeat Aleeah Gould of California. Heaton won the first match, and Gould rebounded to win bout two. In the deciding third match, Heaton beat Gould, 2-1.
Another series went the full three matches at 52 kg, as California’s Gracie Figueroa lost the first match, then swept the final two bouts to defeat Kaden Campbell of Colorado. Campbell dominated match one, 12-4, but rebounded with 7-4 and 6-4 wins. Figueroa was second in both the Junior and Cadet divisions at the 2015 USAW Folkstyle Nationals.
With a dominant performance at 60 kg, 2014 Cadet Nationals champion Ashlynn Ortega of Colorado won the finals in two straight over Hanna Ramos of Wisconsin, with 13-3 and 11-0 technical falls.
2015 USA Wrestling Folkstyle National champion McKayla Campbell of Ohio was also dominant in the finals, scoring a pair of technical falls over 2104 Cadet Nationals champion Naomi Chavez of Texas, 10-0 and 11-0.
Another 2015 USA Wrestling Folkstyle National champion Alexandria Liles of Texas won the 56 kg title, beating Colorado’s Jerzie Estrada in two straight, 6-5 and by pin in 3:25.
2014 Cadet Nationals runner-up Kayla Marano of Oklahoma needed just two bouts to defeat Emily Cue of Colorado in the 65 kg finals.
Two athletes won World Team spots uncontested, Jessica Rudick of Pennsylvania at 38 kg and Vayle Baker of Downtown Mat Club at 40 kg
Three other gold medals were awarded. At 78 kg, Kenya Spenser of Michigan, a past Cadet Nationals champion who was fourth at the 2014 Junior Nationals, defeated Andrea Sennett of Illinois in the finals, 7-4.
Winning five-athlete round robins with undefeated records were Alexis Boruel of Tokay WC at 84 kg and Kimberly Jackson of North Dallas High School at 100 kg.
Medals were also awarded at the Schoolgirl, Kids Div. II and Kids Div. I age levels.
The Body Bar Women’s Nationals concludes on Sunday with the UWW Junior division, with World Team spots up for grabs.
